Washington Area Toyota Dealers Deliver $50,000 Check to The Inn

Ks for Kids logo Tammy Darvish of Darcars Automotive Group joined fellow Washington Area Toyota executives at Nationals Park Tuesday, Oct. 2 to deliver a check for more than $50,000 from Toyota's K's for Kids program to The Children's Inn at NIH. Kathy Russell, The Inn's Chief Executive Officer, as well as several Inn board members accepted the check on the field in front of more than 35,000 fans.

Moments before Tuesday's game with the Phillies, "The

Children's Inn Starting Lineup" was announced and a crew of Inn kids filled the field. The Inn's Chris Petty, 21, of Arizona, who used to play baseball before his illness, threw out the first pitch. "I was nervous," Petty said. Petty and a dozen Inn children met Nats star pitcher Stephen Strasburg who graciously signed hats, balls, and even a cast.

An exciting night all around; and The Nat's won!

Washington Area Toyota Dealers have generously agreed to continue the K's for Kids program through the playoffs. For every strikeout by a National's pitcher, Washington Area Toyota Dealers contribute $37 to The Inn.

Spotlight on Inn Resident Mary Kate Andrepont
Mary Kate Andrepont Last summer, 15-year-old Mary Kate Andrepont didn't feel like herself. During cheerleading conditioning camp, running suddenly became overly challenging for the typically energetic teen. Several biopsies later, Mary Kate was diagnosed with Lymphomatoid Granulomatosis, a type of lymphoma. Within a few weeks, Mary Kate and her parents, Mary and Danny, made the first trip from their home in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, to the National Cancer Institute (NCI) at the National Institutes of Health. Mary Kate had to return to the NCI every month for treatment and recently completed three months of chemotherapy in July. Read more...

24th Annual Congressional Gala Honors Dr. Anthony Fauci and Dr. P. Roy Vagelos

The Inn's 24th Annual Congressional Gala, held on September 19, at The Liaison Hotel, Washington, DC, raised nearly $400,000 for The Inn and attracted about 300 guests, including congressional leaders and business executives. A big thank you to Board Members and Gala Co-Chairs Debbie Dingell, wife of Congressman John Dingell, Democrat from Michigan and Abby Blunt, wife of Senator Roy Blunt, Republican from Missouri. Their continued support of The Inn is greatly appreciated.

The Inn recognized two distinguished scientists with the Starlight Award: Dr. P. Roy Vagelos, former Chief Executive Officer and President of Merck who was instrumental in securing Merck's support in establishing and sustaining The Inn, and Dr. Anthony Fauci, Director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, who developed new strategies for treating pediatric immune system diseases.

A highlight of the evening was a special thank you from a former Inn resident, Hydeia Broadbent, who, at age four, was one of the first children to participate in AIDS research at NIH. Now 28, she thanked NIH and The Inn for extending her life and giving her the promise of a healthy future.
