Wow, what an amazing 3 weeks of
STEM Innovation Leadership Academies! ๐ This year, the Academy placed a special focus on addressing the growing impacts of climate change and the disproportionate ways it is affecting the most under-resourced populations. Each Academy ended with students designing their own energy-efficient product prototypes with a panel of judges selecting a winning project! ๐ก 180 girls from Chicago, D.C./Baltimore, and Philadelphia participated in online educational seminars and discussions, hands-on workshops using tools and other items sent to them beforehand as part of a STEM Supply Kit, and even virtual field trips to noteworthy STEM-related landmarks in their areas.
Congratulations to the winning teams of the Energy Challenge! ๐ In Chicago, the winning project was "Reliable Roadways" from the Turquoise Team which included Blairlanee Bowden, Thea Bueno, Eris Perry, and Mandy Zhang. From Philadelphia, the winning project was "Simply Green Tees" from the Periwinkle Team which included Joyce Liu, Nikhila Kumar, Shadae Scruggs, and Samantha Spolsky. In D.C/Baltimore, the winning project was "Eco-Tray" from the Turquoise team which included Rissah Remy, Rida Zurga, and Danisha Rose.
Even though all of the girls participated virtually, the hands on energy activities, panels, and teamwork still left a lasting impact with the girls. Participant London said, โI learned lots of new things and received some really great advice. I look forward to joining the STEM Academy again next year and becoming a mentor"! Tessa, another participant in the Academy this summer, writes โI walked away with new friends and a way better idea of what I want to major inโ. With a successful wrap to the Exelon STEM Innovation Leadership Academy for 2020, we are looking forward to summer 2021!
