National Grid’s 3-Minute Networked Geothermal Video – National Grid has produced a short video to give the public a vision for networked geothermal heating and cooling. The video includes a quick explanation of how geothermal works. What is networked geothermal? - YouTube

Geothermal Collegiate Competition - The 2023 collegiate competition for geothermal is launching soon - webinar next week - including deliverables, timelines, and prizes. $10,000 is on the line for first place and $6,000 for second! “The U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Geothermal Collegiate Competition (GCC) invites teams from collegiate institutions to develop real-world geothermal solutions while competing for cash prizes and gaining resume experience in the renewable energy industry.” Thanks to Heather Deese from Dandelion Energy for this tip. Article and registration link here

Eversource Leaves the American Gas Association to Focus on ‘Decarbonization’ – Miriam Wasser - WBUR – “New England's largest energy utility, Eversource, has parted ways with the American Gas Association — a powerful industry group that environmentalists say has been instrumental in blocking efforts to address climate change around the country. Eversource spokesperson Chris McKinnon told WBUR that the utility canceled its membership with the group in early 2022 as part of a broader, strategic effort to prioritize ‘decarbonization’ and reduce planet-warming emissions. Eversource’s departure appears to mark the first time a major utility has left the influential gas trade group over diverging climate agendas, a move some energy experts call ‘unprecedented’ and say could be a harbinger of things to come." Tip from Allison at the National Building Electrification Network and Sunstone Strategies. Article and “listen live” link here.

Albany County Facility Goes Geo Under Clean Energy Communities Program - "Albany County is pursuing other additional High Impact Actions to earn points and qualify for another grant to further its clean energy initiatives. The County’s new highway garage, which is currently under construction, will be equipped with a geothermal heat pump system that will serve as a demonstration project to educate staff and visitors on beneficial electrification. The new facility will also integrate a roof-mounted solar array and rainwater collection and reuse system to reduce the County’s emissions and water consumption." Thanks to NYSERDA for this tip. Article link here – see first Albany County section.

California Rule Will Cut Carbon from Baking Cheetos, Chips and More – Maria Gallucci – Canary Media – “Baked bread, crispy tortilla chips, smoked sausages, roasted nuts — all of these finished foods…(are) typically prepared in large commercial ovens that… heat by burning fossil gas, cooking up harmful emissions in the process…Last week, air-pollution regulators adopted a first-in-the-nation rule that aims to dramatically reduce emissions of nitrogen oxides (NOx) from hundreds of commercial food ovens in the (Los Angeles area which is)… home to top food manufacturers such as Bimbo Bakery, Frito-Lay and chip-maker Snak-King…Starting in 2027, nearly 100 facilities operating a total of 218 ovens must meet a zero-emissions limit for NOx, a smog-forming and health-harming pollutant. In order to comply, virtually all companies will have to replace their gas-burning ovens with electric options.” Article link here.

Eversource Begins Drilling on First-in-the-Nation Geothermal Project - "Eversource started drilling this week on approximately 90 bore holes that are an essential component of its networked geothermal pilot program in Framingham, Massachusetts. Once completed, the energy company’s geothermal “loop” will connect 140 customers across nearly 40 buildings – including residential homes, a cabinet store, fire station, Framingham Housing Authority buildings and the community college. Eversource expects its networked geothermal system to be complete and placed in service ahead of the 2023 heating season."  Thanks to NY-GEO member Paul Coons for this tip.  Article link here.

NYSERDA Analysis of Geothermal Installation Costs – As part of its Ground Source Heat Pump Cost Compression Initiative, NYSERDA has published an analysis of the cost of installing a geothermal heating and cooling system. “Due to the drilling requirements and GHEX components, the installed cost of vertical loop GSHP systems is significantly higher than traditional HVAC systems. The estimated costs of a system and potential cost reductions for a typically small installation are shown below.” NY-GEO members are welcome to submit a 3-4 sentence comment on this initiative for publishing in Just In! Article link here.

IRA Home Energy Rebate Programs – Jim Kapsis CEO, the Ad Hoc Group – The Gist - “Karen Zelmar is the manager of the home energy rebate programs, which provide $8.5 billion for home efficiency and electrification projects. We talked to her about their newly released guidance and what it’s like to work at DOE during a pivotal time.” Interview transcript here.

Industrial Electrification Roadmap – The Renewable Thermal Collaborative (RTC) “designed a revamped Electrification Roadmap to help thermal energy users identify, analyze, and execute electrification projects and shift heat production away from fossil fuels to electric technologies powered by renewable sources. End users can follow the roadmap like a decision tree to explore the key considerations and questions to ask when crafting industrial electrification plans." Roadmap link here.

ACEE Urges Demand Flexibility for Water Heaters - The American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy (ACEEE) has published a report on the value of requiring demand flexibility hardware and software for water heating equipment. “Temporarily reducing electric demand was critical to keeping the lights on last year in Texas, California, and (in one massive December storm) the Midwest, Southeast, and Northeast when high demand or power plant failures meant generation had trouble keeping up with demand…Electric storage water heaters can be an excellent tool for this. Washington, Oregon, and Colorado already require new electric water heaters to have demand response capability. A bipartisan bill to make technical improvements to the federal efficiency standard for water heaters would give the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) authority to ensure consistent capabilities nationwide.”  Report link here.

5th Annual Hang Dry Week – “Hang Dry Week started in 2019 when some line laundry enthusiasts and nonprofits got together to celebrate this age old use of solar energy.  Since then, we’ve designated the last week of August as Hang Dry Week and encourage folks to follow the world’s lead and hang dry laundry to save energy and fight climate change. Even though a clothesline may seem like a small, insignificant things it can have outsize impact on emissions and energy usage.  Best of all you can help solve climate change with your undies!” This year’s Hang Dry Week will feature a webinar on heat pump dryers. See 2023 08 23 in our event listings. Hang Dry website here.

China Has First Grid-Scale Gravity Energy Storage System – Sean Wolfe – Renewable Energy World – The world’s first grid-scale gravity energy storage system (GESS), located outside of Shanghai, has entered the first phases of commissioning. The 25 MW/100 MWh GESS is built adjacent to a wind farm and a national grid interconnection site. The system is expected to be fully grid interconnected in Q4 and is expected to have a round trip efficiency above 80%. Article link here.

Redlining the Electric Grid – John Farrell – Institute for Local Self Reliance (ILSR) Energy Democracy Initiative – “Last week, (ILSR’s) podcast guest Alex Hill explained how redlining can happen with the electric grid, not just as a discriminatory behavior in housing. The implications are huge: communities with weak grids can't go solar, charge electric cars, or take many other money-saving, climate-friendly actions. We the People Michigan released a stunning report showing that utility Detroit Edison (DTE) has allowed the grid in areas of high poverty or high concentrations of Black and brown folks to languish without upgrades for decades, leaving these communities behind in the transition to all-electric appliances, vehicles, and solar power.” Article with links to the podcast and the report here.

Health Risks from Natural Gas Odorants? Physicians, Scientists and Engineers (PSE) for Healthy Energy – Natural Gas or methane is colorless and odorless. To increase the ability to detect leaks, chemicals called odorants are often added to gas to give it a sulfurous smell. PSE has performed a review of studies in order to examine the potential health impacts of odorants. “The limited evidence available raises the possibility that organosulfur odorants may pose health risks at exposures much lower than presently understood, though additional dose-response studies are needed to disentangle specific toxicologic effects from nonspecific responses to noxious organosulfur odors. Recommendations are provided including more transparent and prescriptive natural gas odorant use practices.” Thanks to Irene Weiser of Fossil Free Tompkins for this tip. Report link here.

Largest US charging Station to Open in Sacramento – Randy Diamond – Sacramento Bee – “The nation’s largest electric car and truck charging facility will open near Sacramento International Airport in late 2025, charging company WattEV has announced. The company, armed with a $34 million federal grant issued through the California Transportation Commission, will build a total of 120 chargers, 30 fast chargers for passenger vehicles, and 90 high-power chargers for medium- and heavy-duty commercial electric vehicles.” Thanks to California GEO President Bill Martin for this tip. Article link here.

EV vs. Gasoline, the Cost of a Fill Up – Michael J. Coren - Climate Coach, Washington Post – “In all 50 states, it’s cheaper for the everyday American to fill up with electrons — and much cheaper in some regions such as the Pacific Northwest, with low electricity rates and high gas prices. This assumes, as the Energy Department estimates, that about 80 percent of the time we fuel up at home, where electricity prices are lower. For example, in Washington state, it costs about $115 to fill a Ford F-150 pickup with gas, for 483 miles of range. Covering that distance in an electric F-150 Lightning costs about $34 — an $80 savings."  Article link here.

Climate Updates:

Study: 19 'Mass Extinctions' Had CO2 Levels We're Now Veering Toward Sascha Pare – LIVESCIENCE – “The research looked at peaks in biodiversity loss and their relationship with atmospheric CO2, finding 50 events over the last 534 million years that can be considered mass extinctions….By 2100, atmospheric carbon dioxide levels could rise to 800 parts per million by volume (ppmv) — almost double the concentration of roughly 421 ppmv recorded this year — if we fail to curb emissions from burning fossil fuels and converting land for agriculture. That would be edging close to the average CO2 concentrations (870 ppmv) associated with huge crashes in marine biodiversity over the last 534 million years, according to a study published June 22 in the journal Earth's Future. These extinction events are preserved in the fossil record, allowing scientists to plot how biodiversity and atmospheric CO2 evolved throughout Earth's history.” Thanks to Carl DeVyver for this tipArticle link here.

Brazil Cuts Amazon Deforestation – Jonathan Watts – The Guardian - “Deforestation in the Brazilian Amazon fell by at least 60% in July compared to the same month last year,…The exact figure, which is based on the Deter satellite alert system, will be released in the coming days, but independent analysts described the preliminary data as “incredible” and said the improvement compared with the same month last year could be the best since 2005. The rapid progress highlights the importance of political change. A year ago, under the far-right then president, Jair Bolsonaro, the Amazon was suffering one of the worst cutting and burning seasons in recent history. But since a new administration led by Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva took power at the start of the year, the government has penalised land grabbers, mounted paramilitary operations to drive out illegal miners, demarcated more indigenous land and created more conservation areas.” Thanks to author Bill McKibben for this tip. Article link here

Bringing Up Climate on a First Date is Hot – Erica Berry – NY Times Guest Column – “I don’t approach these conversations with an agenda or as a quiz. But I’ve found that talking about how global warming affects our lives, however casually, becomes a sort of canary in the coal mine for learning about people’s broader beliefs and behaviors. How black-and-white they see the world, how they view their role in the community, how they engage with science and systemic inequality.” Column link here.
