Industry Updates:

EPA Sets Stricter Limits on Hydrofluorocarbons – Matthew Daly – AP (Associated Press) - “A rule announced Tuesday will impose a 40% overall reduction in HFCs starting next year, part of a global phaseout designed to slow climate change. The rule aligns with a 2020 law that calls for an 85% reduction in production and use of the climate-damaging chemicals by 2036. Officials said refrigeration and air conditioning systems sold in the United States will emit far fewer HFCs as a result of the rule, the second step in a 15-year phasedown of the chemicals that once dominated refrigeration and cooing equipment.” Thanks to Janet Lenichek, Chair of the Sierra Club Niagara Group, for this tip. Article link here.

Local Law 97 in NYC Needs Support to Avoid Loopholes – John Rath – NY-GEO Director of Operations - NY-GEO staff and board members have testified in the past in support of a strong Local law 97 that would give NYC the toughest and most effective/enforceable ban on fossil fuel use in buildings. Mayor Adams is under pressure from real estate and fossil energy organizations to allow loopholes focused on renewable energy credits and extending penalties for non compliance in the final version. Please consider adding your name to the large list of climate advocates in a letter to Mayor Adams and read more about the issue at this link.

Governor’s Statement on Torrential Storm – Shantel Destra – City & State – “After a weekend of torrential rain storms and flash flooding across the state, Gov. Kathy Hochul delivered an update on storm conditions from the Hudson Valley… while asserting recent events show the effects of climate change. ‘My friends … This is the new normal,’ Hochul said after explaining this was only the second time in history the National Weather Service has issued a flash flood emergency, and these events come just a few weeks after smoke from Canadian wildfires negatively impacted the air quality in the state. ‘We must change our behavior as a planet, as a country, as a state and in our own homes,’ the governor added, to ‘fight the ravages of climate change’… Hochul said she’d heard stories from residents describing their loss, fear and anxiety while witnessing the pain in their eyes.” (from 2023 07 10 – City & State First Read) Article link here.

Turning Up The HEAT! - After climate change-supercharged torrential rainfall shut down Amtrak service, washed away Hudson Valley roads and bridges, and killed an Orange County resident, N.Y. Assembly Member Sarahana Shrestha and advocates held a press conference Friday to call on the Assembly to commit to passing the NY HEAT Act and push Governor Hochul to include it in her 2024 executive budget.  NY-GEO Director of Operations "JR" Rath spoke at the press conference saying "New York Geothermal Energy Organization members include drillers, installers, laborers, engineers, designers, and HVAC professionals.  We know geothermal heating and cooling is the most efficient and pollution free way to heat and cool buildings.  Now we need a level playing field, free from the 100 foot rule that provides subsidized gas hook-ups, to make this technology the most affordable and equitable. The NY HEAT act will do just that."

$20 Billion Set for National Clean Financing Network “…the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) launched two Notices of Funding Opportunity (NOFOs) for $20 billion across two grant competitions under the historic $27 billion Greenhouse Gas Reduction Fund… The $14 billion National Clean Investment Fund will provide grants to support two-to-three national clean financing institutions, enabling them to partner with the private sector to provide accessible, affordable financing for tens of thousands of clean technology projects nationwide. The $6 billion Clean Communities Investment Accelerator will provide grants to support two-to-seven hub nonprofit organizations, enabling them to provide funding and technical assistance to public, quasi-public, not-for-profit, and non-profit community lenders working in low-income and disadvantaged communities…” Thanks to David Smedick of RMI for this tip. Article link here.

Associated Press Features Geothermal – “Summers are famously humid in New York State, but life in the Maioli household has gotten more comfortable since the couple installed a new heating and cooling system — one that isn’t well known yet in the U.S. ‘My wife is pretty happy because in the summer we can keep it to as cold as we like,’ typically 69 or 70 F, said Joe Maioli, in Ontario, New York. In 2021, the couple installed a geothermal or ground source heat pump…’Cooling the house for a month is maybe $10 worth of electricity, and this is the most efficient way to do it,’ said Maioli. During the coldest winter month, their highest heating bill was around $70, he said.” The article features a pair of nice 2-minute videos on how geo works. Tip from NY-GEO member Paul Coons as well as  Peter Jensen at the National Building Electrification Network and Sunstone Strategies.  Article link here.

Industrial Heat Pump Alliance Forms – Ben Somberg - ACEEE - "The Industrial Heat Pump (IHP) Alliance, consisting of the American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy (ACEEE), the National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA), and the Renewable Thermal Collaborative (RTC), is pleased to announce the launch of its collaborative effort to promote the adoption of industrial heat pumps in United States manufacturing plants." Article link here.

Beyond Efficiency to Electrification in California – Lukas Boyd – The 2035 Initiative - "The 2035 Initiative’s Emerging Technology Review brought together advocates, academics, government officials, and private sector leaders to discuss our electrified future and how to achieve it. To distill the workshop’s key recommendations and lessons learned, the following memo discusses: 1) the benefits of electrification, 2) California’s electrification successes, 3) the next steps that California should take to accelerate electrification, 4) how IRA investments will supercharge electrification, and 5) how electrification can advance equity and justice." Which States Have the Most Solar and Wind Power Jobs? -Maria Virginia Olano – Canary Media – California and Texas! Per the DOE, in 2022: there were more than 340,000 solar jobs across the country, with California accounting for over one-third of them; and wind had about 125,000 workers, with Texas accounting for 26,000 of them. In the electric power sector overall, renewable energy jobs already far outnumber those in fossil fuel generation. A significant number of these are in construction, which tend to be temporary arrangements. However, buildout demand is not slowing. Can Mobile Batteries Make Dirty Diesel Generators Obsolete? – Jeff St. John - “Batteries are already powering cars, trucks and buses, and backing up homes, businesses and the grid. So can they also replace the ubiquitous but dirty diesel generator? Staid corporations and plucky startups have been trying to answer that question for more than a decade, with relatively little success.  But with battery costs falling, performance improving by leaps and bounds, and demand for carbon- and air-pollution-emissions-free mobile power sources growing, the moment for the battery-powered generator may have finally arrived.” Article link here.

Amazon - A Big Player In Renewable Energy – Renewable Energy World – As Amazon continues to expand its global renewable energy portfolio in its effort toward net-zero carbon, it has reached 30 solar and wind projects in the southeastern U.S. alone. With its five new solar and wind projects, Amazon expects to generate more than 7,500 GWh once fully operational. With stated plans to power its operations with 100% renewable energy by 2025, Amazon is the largest global purchaser of renewable energy. It’s also the largest purchaser in several states, such as Kentucky, Missouri, and Mississippi. Article link here.

NYSERDA: $10 Million for Carbon Neutral Developments - "NYSERDA has funding available for the Carbon Neutral Community Economic Development Program (CNCED). The program supports the planning, design, and installation of economic development projects to operate at carbon neutral or net zero energy performance. The CNCED program is offered as a competitive program for exemplary, highly replicable, and resilient carbon neutral or net zero projects in two categories for facility-level and community-level carbon neutral or net zero energy performance.” NYSERDA web page here.

Seven Telltale Signs of an HVAC Refrigerant Leak – Emily Newton Engineered Systems - As commercial HVAC systems age, they may experience leaks. Because these units are considerably larger than their consumer-grade counterparts, a commercial air conditioning refrigerant leak can quickly become a complex, expensive problem. Resolving these issues as early as possible is essential to minimizing these costs and protecting occupant safety. Fixing a leak efficiently means being able to spot the warning signs. Here are seven common symptoms of a refrigerant leak to look out for…” Article link here

AI To Reduce C&I Solar Project Costs? – Sean Wolfe – Renewable Energy World –"The DOE is providing funding for a research team to advance machine learning (ML) and artificial intelligence for solar applications, with a focus on reducing O&M costs in commercial & industrial solar portfolios. ML is often out of reach for multi-vendor footprints due to complexity and cost. The team aims to solve this problem by using an open-source platform meant to boost interoperability for both devices from multiple manufacturers and multiple ML frameworks." Can this apply to geothermal projects?  Article link here.

Climate Updates:

Burlington, VT Responds to Flooding Miro Weinberger – Burlington, VT, Mayor - “As the stormwaters recede, the City team has been hard at work assessing and repairing damages and supporting community members and other Vermont towns impacted by the floods. The major impacts of this emergency on Burlington and our local recovery efforts are focused on two serious events, a sewer line break under the Winooski River which brings wastewater from the east-side of the New North End to the City’s North Plant, and substantial flooding at the Intervale – which has devastated several small farms in our community with a near total loss at the height of their productive growing season. “ Article link here

Inland New England and Upstate NY are among the safest places on Earth from the ravages of climate instability. Yet, in the past 7 months, we’ve had a brutal winter storm that killed 47 in Buffalo alone, weeks of intense smoke throughout the Northeast poisoning our lungs, and now a “once in a lifetime” flood engulfing the Hudson Valley, the State of Vermont and elsewhere in the region.

What to Do with Climate Emotions? – Jia Tolentino – New Yorker Therapy Issue– “If the goal is to insure that the planet remains habitable, what is the right degree of panic, and how do you bear it?... It may be impossible to seriously consider the reality of climate change for longer than ninety seconds without feeling depressed, angry, guilty, grief-stricken, or simply insane. The earth has warmed about 2.3 degrees Fahrenheit since pre-industrial times, and the damage is irreparable… ‘The earth is really quite sick right now,’ Joyeeta Gupta, the co-chair of the Earth Commission, said recently, after the organization published a study arguing that seven of eight environmental thresholds needed to protect life on the planet have already been breached. And this, today, is as good as it will ever get within our lifetimes: every day that we step out into the uncanny weather, we experience a better and more stable climate than any we will ever experience again.” Thanks to Laura Grube for this tip.  Article link here.

Climate Change at the Doctor’s OfficePrasanna Vankina – NRDC – “Dr. Cheryl Holder helps her patients and fellow physicians find holistic solutions to coping with the intertwined impacts of sickness and climate change…Doctors and nurses are increasingly finding themselves on the frontlines of the climate crisis as it takes a direct toll on our health. This is particularly true for those who care for low-income communities and communities of color. Their patients include workers in sectors like agriculture and construction and others who do strenuous labor outside in excessive heat, or who work indoors in poorly ventilated spaces like factories and kitchens. They serve firefighters and first responders who have been confronting rising levels of wildfire smoke, which can exacerbate asthma and contribute to other respiratory diseases. And more of their patients are encountering infectious diseases carried by everything from ballooning populations of mosquitoes to contaminated floodwaters. The mental health trauma of climate change, among disaster workers especially, has also grown clearer than ever.” Article link here.
