GeoStar Top Job Results – The Top Job competition has been one of the highlights of the NY-GEO annual conference since its inception in 2015, and is sponsored by GeoStar. Its objective is to highlight and recognize the incredible skill, talent, and creative imagination that exist in geothermal system designers and installers. This year’s finalists included:
-
Reaves Christie from Geosource Energy in Ontario Canada with their 240 Markland project that overcame obstacles and space constraints to build a 9 story 234 unit market rate apartment building.
-
Johannes Rosemann from Buffalo Geothermal who renovated the Pierce Arrow Lofts which is on the National Register of Historic places into 127 apartments, 7,500 sq ft restaurant that is completely heated and cooled and domestic hot water supplied by GSHP.
-
Steve Taylor from Boucher Energy presented the Historic Fitch Tavern GSHP conversion of this 300 year old building.
-
James Thomas presented his project, MoonShot Farm, how he successfully heated the 96 foot, 6 mil plastic hoop house and kept the flowers growing and thriving.
-
Claire Lukasiewicz from NY CREATES demonstrated how the ZEB building at the SUNY@ Albany Campus harvests enough energy to heat and cool the 363,000 sq ft building.
And the winner is……Buffalo Geothermal for the Pierce Arrow Lofts. Congratulations to Johannes and all contestants for their inspiration and demonstration of their non fossil fuel success stories.
| | Cap & Invest Faces Delays - Marie French – POLITICO – French’s tweet was titled Summer is Cancelled Folks – NY’s Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) had planned on issuing draft regulations this summer for NY’s Cap and Invest program to ratchet down fossil-fuel use. DEC and NYSERDA have now announced seven webinars on the proposed program for June, with comments due mid-July, and a second round of input planned for “later this year.” “The June webinars will provide information and seek input on issues including natural gas, industries that use large amounts of fossil fuels and are exposed to competition in lower-cost markets, waste and the electricity sector.” Article link here. DEC/NYSERDA announcement here | | The Push for the NY HEAT Act – Marie J. French – POLITICO – “Advocates are still hoping to get a major change to the state’s utility laws passed in the waning days of session. They held a virtual presser with Assemblymember Jessica González-Rojas on Friday morning (5/12) continuing to push the NY HEAT Act, which would eliminate subsidies for gas hookups, allow for the retirement of segments of the gas pipeline system and cap energy bills for low-income residents at 6 percent of their income. ‘New York’s transition from fossil fuels won’t be complete until we pass the NY HEAT Act,’ González-Rojas said.” Article link here. | |
Assembly Member Jessica González-Rojas
Press Coverage of the NY HEAT Act – Lisa Marshall of New Yorkers for Clean Power sent the list below of recent articles on the NY HEAT Act. Marshall urges us to like and retweet each of the articles.
Geothermal Drilling Bill Advances in Legislature – Drilling geothermal boreholes deeper than 500 feet in NY is currently regulated under NY DEC’s prohibitively expensive and burdensome oil & gas well regulations. S6604 (Harckham)/A6949 (Glick) would bring 500+ foot boreholes under the more appropriate DEC Division of Water regulations. On Tuesday, May 16th, A6949 was sent from the Assembly Environmental Conservation Committee to the Rules Committee, from which it can be passed by the Assembly. The EnCon Committee, chaired by the bill sponsor Deborah Glick, moved the bill without dissent. The ability to drill past 500 feet is projected to cut costs and save time as geothermal installations increase in denser urban areas, in multifamily developments, and in thermal energy networks. | | Heat Pumps for 50 Mobile Homes in Tompkins County: Stay Cool in Summer, Warm in Winter! - Sustainable Finger Lakes - “The Mobile Home Project will provide funding for 50 mobile home energy upgrades in Tompkins County for the health, safety, comfort, long term affordability, and resiliency of the mobile home occupants. As New York State moves towards electrification, it is important to ensure that low-to-moderate income residents of Tompkins County have access to highly-efficient systems for heating/cooling and energy efficiency for their homes. This project highlights mobile homes as an affordable housing option and seeks to gather useful information that supports increased energy efficiency and stability of these homes.” Thanks to Assembly Member Anna Kelles for this tip. Website link here. | | Assembly Member Wallace Pushes Back on National Fuel Robocalls - – Colin Kinneburgh – New York Focus – National Fuel has used a $100,000 website funded directly by the utility’s customers to push robocalls and emails to Legislators and Governor Hochul opposing recommendations from NY’s Climate Action Scoping Plan “Assemblymember Monica Wallace — whose office was flooded by National Fuel-prompted robocalls in February — said it seemed ‘totally inappropriate.’ ‘It would appear to be a violation of both the spirit and the letter of the law,' Wallace told New York Focus. ‘I would urge the Public Service Commission to investigate that further and hold them accountable if that is in fact the case.’ " Article link here.

NYS Approves Publicly Owned Renewables - Akielly Hu – Canary Media – A new law directs the New York Power Authority to plan, construct and operate renewable energy projects in service of the state’s renewable energy goals when the private sector falls short. The law is lauded by energy-democracy, environmental-justice and labor groups. However, the law was opposed by power producers, who argued that the law creates an uneven playing field. Full story here.
| | More on Income-Based Electric Bills: The Newest Utility Fight in California – Jeff St. John – Canary Media – “Starting as soon as next year, the electric bills of a majority of Californians could be based not just on how much power they use, but also on how much money they make. That would be a nationwide first — and depending on who you ask, it could be the fairest and best way to help people adopt clean electric vehicles and heating, or an unjust and unworkable scheme that could discourage rooftop solar and energy efficiency.” Article link here. | |
Treasury Releases Guidance on IRA Domestic Content Bonus – “As part of the Biden-Harris Administration’s Investing in America strategy, the U.S. Department of the Treasury and Internal Revenue Service (IRS) (has) released guidance that provides detailed information about the domestic content bonus under the Inflation Reduction Act for clean energy projects and facilities that meet American manufacturing and sourcing requirements. The guidance was developed in partnership with the Department of Energy and Department of Transportation.” Press release with link to guidance here.
Planning How To Upgrade CA’s Electrical Grid - Jeff St. John – Canary Media –California policy requires all new cars and light trucks sold in the state to be electric or plug-in hybrids by 2035, at which point the state expects to have 13.5 million EVs on the road, compared to about 1.5 million today. Startup Kevala collected granular customer-level data to prepare a report for CA’s big three investor-owned utilities. The report predicts that the utilities will need to invest up to $50 billion by 2035 to handle those EVs. The report data can also be used by the utilities to forecast where and when the grid will need to be upgraded. Full story here.

Vermont Charts Transition from Fuel Oil – Maria Gallucci – Canary Media – “Late last week, Vermont’s Legislature enacted the Affordable Heat Act (S.5) to curb greenhouse gas emissions from the state’s homes, offices and industrial buildings, ending what has been a ‘tumultuous, yearslong battle’ to rein in the state’s reliance on imported fossil fuels. Policymakers in both chambers voted to strike down a veto from Republican Governor Phil Scott, who had rejected the measure on April 28…’Vermonters are facing a climate emergency and a heating crisis, and the status quo isn’t working for anyone,’ Elena Mihaly, vice president and director of Conservation Law Foundation Vermont, an environmental group.” Fossil-fuel interests opposed S5 and clean energy advocates have criticized its expansive definition of clean energy, which includes biofuels and renewable natural gas, both of which pose climate dangers. Article link here.
| | The Sleeping Giant of The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Has Stirred – Oliver Milman – The Guardian - “In the past month, an avalanche of anti-pollution rules, targeting everything from toxic drinking water to planet-heating gases in the atmosphere, have been issued by the agency. Belatedly, the sizable weight of the US federal government is being thrown at longstanding environmental crises, including the climate emergency. On Thursday, the EPA’s month of frenzied activity was crowned by the toughest ever limits upon carbon pollution from America’s power sector, with large, existing coal and gas plants told they must slash their emissions by 90% or face being shut down." Thanks to Janet Lenichek of the Sierra Club for this tip. Article link here. | | Low Carbon Concrete - Maria Galucci – Canary Media – Portland cement production accounts for between 7 and 8 percent of global CO2 emissions. CarbonBuilt claims its process reduces overall CO2 emissions from concrete-making by 70 to 100 percent. The process creates a mixture that replaces the CO2 - producing raw materials used to make Portland cement with industrial waste products, and injects CO2 while heating the mixture. At present, plants using the process derive the injected CO2 from forestry waste, or directly from the atmosphere. Full story here | |
2023 RHN Legislative and Budget Agenda - The Renewable Heat Now Campaign (RHN) is organizing to win funding and policies that will move fossil fuels out of our buildings affordably and equitably. The legislative package includes the NY Home Energy Equitable Transition (HEAT) Act – (S2016/A4592 – Krueger/Fahy). See more on the Heat Act here. And take action here.

Spike Anticipated in Global Heating – World Meteorological Organization - “The likelihood of El Niño developing later this year is increasing, according to a new update from the World Meteorological Organization (WMO). This would have the opposite impacts on weather and climate patterns in many regions of the world to the long-running La Niña and would likely fuel higher global temperatures…At this stage there is no indication of the strength or duration of El Niño. ‘We just had the eight warmest years on record, even though we had a cooling La Niña for the past three years and this acted as a temporary brake on global temperature increase. The development of an El Niño will most likely lead to a new spike in global heating and increase the chance of breaking temperature records,’ said WMO Secretary-General Prof. Petteri Taalas." Link to WMO press release here .
WMO Caption: Probabilistic forecasts of surface air temperature and precipitation for the season May-July 2023. The tercile category with the highest forecast probability is indicated by shaded areas. The most likely category for below-normal, above-normal and near-normal is depicted in blue, red and grey shadings respectively for temperature, and orange, green and grey shadings respectively for precipitation. White areas indicate equal chances for all categories in both cases. The baseline period is 1993–2009.
Sneezing More This Spring - It's Not Just You – Thank the Climate Crisis – The Climate Reality Project - “Your nose is dripping – it’s that time of year. The plight of seasonal allergies takes hold every time you dare step outside. But did you know that, depending on where you live, climate change could be making allergy season even worse?” Article link here.

Irene Weiser of Fossil Free Tompkins sent us the message below, containing an Artificial Intelligence created poem on the stranded fossil-fuel assets that the gas industry is continuing to create despite the necessary decarbonization of our energy systems. “having more fun w/Chat GPT this morning...
Oh, stranded assets, a tale to be told,
In the world of decarbonization, a story unfolds.
When we stop using gas to heat our places,
These assets can become empty spaces.
You see, my friends, gas was once the star,
Warming our homes from near and far.
But times are changing, we must shift gears,
Towards cleaner options, to calm our fears.
When we build without a plan in sight,
Stranded assets can cause quite a fright.
These pipelines and systems, once so grand,
Can turn into burdens on our land.
But what about the people, you might ask,
Especially those with lower income, an important task.
If we don't support them, it wouldn't be fair,
Left paying off debts, it's a burden to bear.
So, let's ensure a managed exit, my dear,
A strategic plan to make the path clear.
Support for lower-income folks is a must,
To enable them to decarbonize and adjust.
Financial assistance, grants, and aid,
To help them transition, unafraid.
Investments in new technologies, we must make,
So that decarbonization is not a mistake.
By providing support and proper care,
We can avoid leaving anyone in despair.
Lower-income people won't be left behind,
With adequate help, solutions they'll find.
So, let's plan for the future, let's be wise,
Decarbonization can be a prize.
With support and a managed exit in place,
We'll create a sustainable and fair space.”
