What We've Been Up To

As we wind down 2023, we can’t help but reflect on what a wonderful year it has been. This year we celebrated our 10-year anniversary! That’s 10 years of helping the most needy and vulnerable cats, 10 years of taking in those who are overlooked and left behind, and 10 years of advocating for the value of senior cats!

We are proud of our outreach programs like Help Meowt, which assists owners and their kitties in their time of need, and the Roswell Program, which helps cats get adopted from the Roswell shelter. We also have a new “pet” project helping a small rural community in Melrose, NM. You can read all about our Melrose adventures later in this newsletter.

We continue to grow our foundational programs including the Furever Foster program and our Senior Cats for Senior Laps program. Both allow us to continue our mission to save cats from shelters.

There is an air of anticipation at June’s as we look forward to 2024. Each year brings new opportunities for us to expand our mission and help even more cats. In the past 10 years we’ve taken in cats from California, Arizona, Texas, Illinois, Kansas, and Florida, and as we continue to grow, we know the requests for assistance will only increase. For that reason, our desire to open a facility deepens and our search for property becomes so much more important.

The past 10 years have all been made possible because your generous and unwavering support. We can’t express our gratitude enough! We look forward to another 10 years of saving cats with you by our side!

Gratefully,

Janet

The Melrose Project

It all started with a Facebook message…as so many stories do. A woman named Staci was asking for help for a senior cat who was living outside in a small, rural town called Melrose, located in eastern NM. Staci moved to Melrose 5 years earlier, and from day one she saw a senior cat named Peaches living outside. Staci and her neighbor Patsy became concerned for Peaches as she wasn’t doing very well, and they hoped we could take Peaches into our care. We saw pictures of Peaches and knew she needed our help, but before we could respond, Staci shared another photograph of a kitten whose eyes were bulging out. Let’s just say, it hit us right where it hurt, and we knew in that moment, we were helping both cats. Arrangements were made, and Peaches and the kitten traveled to Albuquerque. Upon picking up the cats, we learned there were other cats on the property who needed help.

So, we planned a trip to Melrose to assess the situation and meet Staci and Pasty. On arrival we realized this would be a huge undertaking. There were many cats and kittens roaming outside, and many of the kittens had awful eye infections, which are a common in large outdoor colonies. Even as a senior cat rescue, we knew we weren’t leaving without a few “eye bulging” kittens in tow.

Since we’ve never done Trap, Neuter, and Release (TNR) we weren’t sure how we were going to spay/neuter ALL of these cats. Melrose is a small community, and the local vets couldn’t handle a colony this big. Fortunately, we learned about two upcoming spay/neuter clinics in Roswell. All we had to do was get traps and supplies, drive to Melrose, trap the cats, drive them to Roswell (an hour and a half away), get the cats fixed, and then drive them back to Melrose, no problem! *insert nervous laughter here*

With careful planning (thank you Anna), great volunteers (thank you Anna, Patsy, and Staci), and some collaboration the TNR work started. The first spay/neuter clinic was hosted by Wild Blue Cats (WBC), and they helped us fix 16 cats! The second clinic was hosted by the Colorado Animal Welfare League (CAWL), and they helped us fix 32 cats! We are so grateful for WBCs and CAWL for allowing us so many spaces at their clinics.

In total we’ve helped 76 cats so far! Some of the cats have been fixed and returned to the property, some of the cats and kittens went to other rescue groups, and some of the cats and kittens are at JSCR awaiting adoption. In case you’re wondering, yes, many of the kittens needed eye removal surgery, so JSCR now has a “Pirate Kitten Club”, but they are all doing well! There are still more cats who need our assistance at the Melrose property, and we will continue until every cat gets the care they need. While we continue to focus on saving seniors, the cats of Melrose touched our hearts, and we are humbled to be a part of helping these very deserving cats.

We Need Wheels

Now that we have embarked on this mission to help the Melrose cats, our need for a reliable rescue vehicle is larger than ever.

We need minivan, or similar type vehicle, that can hold multiple traps and carriers. In addition to our Melrose project, we frequently meet transports from various locations within and outside New Mexico. We visit shelters and always find ourselves going to and from the vet almost daily.

Do you, or someone you know, have a used minivan, or similar type vehicle, with low miles you are willing to sell or donate to us? If so, please contact us at info@junesseniorcatrescue.org.

Help Meowt

We often get requests for help from people who can’t afford to provide veterinary care to their own cats or for community cats they care for. These cats often face surrender, euthanasia, or continued suffering if the care they need isn’t provided. Our Help Meowt program allows us to help cats in dire need without being surrendered to JSCR. We assist with the veterinary costs so owners and community cat caretakers can provide their cats with the veterinary care they desperately need.

So far in 2023, our Help Meowt program helped 150 cats and kittens!!

Want a June's Cat?

Minnie is an exceptionally friendly 2 year-old available for adoption. She loves to play, but is also up for a good snuggle or head rub. She can go from play to purr in 3 seconds! Minnie is litter box trained, spayed, microchipped, and up-to-date on vaccinations. She gets along well with other cats and cat friendly dogs.

Thank YOU!

We can't do this work without all our amazing donors! We would be remiss if we didn't say a special thank you to our monthly donors, to Sally, who won our 50/50 raffle and donated her winnings back to JSCR, and to Lemyra for her continuous support. You all keep us going! Thank you!
