From Shy to Shine

As we embrace Senior Pet Month, we’re delighted to share the heartwarming story of Bootsie, a resilient 13-year-old cat who has shown us the true meaning of patience.

Bootsie arrived at JSCR alongside two remarkable 19-year-old cats. While her more senior companions were quite outgoing, Bootsie stood out for her profound shyness. When she came into our care, she was a picture of fearfulness.

When entering a new environment, it's best cats be provided with a quiet room and lots of hiding places. Talking to them when feeding can help them associate you with something positive, and doing quiet activities in their space, such as reading, can also help them become comfortable with you. A good rule of thumb is the 3-3-3 rule: it takes three days to decompress, three weeks to learn your routines, and three months to start to feel safe. Each cat is different, with some taking more or less time than others.

Bootsie’s initial weeks were marked by constant hiding, emerging only for brief moments to eat. Her trust was fragile but not lost. Rather than pushing her to confront her fears, her foster family patiently respected her pace. The good news is this patience paid off! After 38 days, Bootsie finally took a chance and allowed herself to be pet by her foster mom. Now with each passing day, she grows more confident. Her transformation from a frightened soul to an affectionate, chatty companion has been nothing short of remarkable.

Bootsie’s story is a powerful reminder of why senior pets are so deserving of our patience and love. Though they may take a bit longer, their hearts, once opened, are filled with boundless love, and the joy they bring into our lives is worth the wait.
