Two Giant Pandas Make Enchanting Debut at Dutch Zoo |
 |
|
 |
Wu Wen |
The two giant pandas living at Ouwehands Zoo in the Dutch city of Rhenen staged an enchanting debut for hundreds of long-awaited admirers on Tuesday afternoon.
After six weeks in quarantine since their arrival on April 12, Wu Wen, the female giant panda, made tentative steps into her outdoor enclosure.
Xing Ya, the male, strode out of his court like an emperor inspecting his new territory. He patrolled the grassland, tested a shallow rig, pawed the wooden wall and tried to climb up a trunk which defied his heavy body.
"Both are in perfect health and have adapted well to their new home," said Zhang Hongwen, chief economist of China's State Forestry Administration.
Wu Wen and Xing Ya, both three-and-a-half-year-old, will stay at Ouwenhands for 15 years. Native to south central China, they belong to a conservation reliant vulnerable species which count only 1,864 individuals in the wild.

| How Bei Bei Has Started His Summer |
Bei Bei is a bit of a daredevil. Although eating and sleeping are still his favorite pastimes, the giant panda cub loves to climb trees. Lately, he has been climbing trees in his yard and sliding all the way down. Giant pandas are excellent climbers, but they are also built to withstand falls. Just as his sister Bao Bao did at the same age, Bei Bei has broken several branches in the process, much to the dismay of the Zoo's horticulturalists. The young bear has also taken a liking to assorted-sized tubs and spends a lot of time plonked in them-even the little ones that he has outgrown-munching on bamboo or just taking in his surroundings.
The almost two-year-old was weaned successfully from his mother Mei Xiang earlier this year, which took about a week of adjustment. "After the first week, they move on and live life separately," says Laurie Thompson, assistant curator of giant pandas. These days, life for Bei Bei also involves a lot of eating and sleeping-particularly on his hammock made of donated firehose that his older sister Bao Bao also used.
A good eater with a special affinity for bamboo, Bei Bei now weighs roughly 150 pounds-significantly more than his older brother Tai Shan who, at Bei Bei's age, weighed roughly 130 pounds and Bao Bao who, at 20 months, was about 115 pounds. Last month, Bei Bei passed a mucus stool-a small sticky chunk of mucus-which caused him some discomfort for several hours, but after he passed it he bounced right back. Mucous stools are not uncommon in giant pandas. They usually follow a short episode of abdominal discomfort and decreased appetite. Usually, once a mucous stool is passed the panda feels better and he begins eating and behaving normally. The panda team monitors all of the pandas who are experiencing the signs of a mucous stool carefully to be sure their behavior returns to normal after passing it.

How A Wild Berry Is Helping To Protect China's Giant Pandas And Its Countryside
|
In the cool mountains of the Upper Yangtze region, Chinese villagers clamber up dogwood and maple trees to gather what Dr. Oz has called a "miracle anti-aging pill." The small, red schisandra berry has a peculiar taste - five tastes, in fact, because it's considered to be at once sweet, sour, salty, bitter and pungent.
Chinese restaurants serve it macerated in alcohol from tall glass containers, like the office water cooler, where customers can fill a cup. Long before it became a "superfood" in the U.S., schisandra was made into bright-colored juices, jams and savory soups. It has always been a medicinal plant, prized for its ability to calm chronic coughs, night sweats, incontinence and insomnia. But now the berry is at the center of a dramatic new approach to conservation, helping to save both the forest where it grows - one of the most biodiverse places on the planet - and the villagers who harvest it.
Across China, families are allotted farm plots by the government. For years, people in the Upper Yangtze pooled resources to supplement what they could grow on their own with communal fields of corn and other staples on the high slopes surrounding their homes - crops they sold for extra cash.
But as the hills were stripped to make way for farms and logging, the mountains started to break with mudslides and rockslides. That destroyed forests where the vast majority of the country's commercially harvested medicinal plants, like magnolia bulbs and angelica roots, are found, as well as crucial habitat for the endangered giant panda.

Aiden turned 8 yrs old on April 9. Aiden has many gifts and one of those gifts is Autism. His autism allows him to focus on certain things with great interest and one of those things for him are Pandas! Aiden loves learning about everything Panda! This year for his birthday he has asked that he not receive gifts but donations to help protect his beloved Panda's. One day we will make to it to China for Aiden to study and visit with Pandas in their natural habitat. Thank you for all that you do to protect and educate about these amazing animals!

Logan is 5 years old and a huge Giant Panda fan. She found Pandas International when she was looking for ideas on how she could help the animals she loves so much. She was so happy to find that Pandas International is so close to Denver.
She read about Pennies 4 Pandas, and since then, Logan was determined to raise some money to help. She decided to clean out her old toys and sell them. With her idea, she managed to raise 59 dollars to donate to Pandas International! We are so proud of her. She has already spread the word about Pandas and is also working on another fundraising idea with a friend.
Thank you Logan for your generosity and help with saving the Giant Pandas.

El Camino High School's Animal Club
Helps the Pandas
|
El Camino High School's Animal Club had a vision to help save beloved giant pandas from extinction. We were determined to raise funds in support of Pandas International, even if it meant one coin at a time. From there, we thought of the slogan-Pennies For Pandas. Our club members came together and made unique donation jars. We asked members to carry jars around schools and hopefully raise some funds from classmates and teachers. It was the perfect opportunity to talk about the cause and explain the critical situation pandas were facing. In addition we raised awareness through school posters and announcements. We were pleasantly surprised by the numerous support we received from our school community. In the end we counted over $200 . ECHS Animal Club is happy to help out Pandas International. One penny at a time.
Thank you to everyone at ECHS Animal Club for helping to save the Giant Pandas.
