HAPPY PRIDE MONTH!

Pride is an annual celebration for the LGBTQIA+ community. Honoring contributions in history, society and cultures within the community. Members of this community have historically experienced struggles in societal stigma, discrimination, and civil and human rights.

Pride originated from the Stonewall riots of June 1969. A year later a historical parade marched in Manhattan opening more opportunities to fight for equal rights. Pride is celebrated universally any time of the year and includes parades, community events, and celebrations.

Pride events offer opportunities for connection, support, and belonging for the LGBTQIA+ community, especially for youth who are often displaced by family. The LGBTQIA+ community experiences higher rates of depression and anxiety. It is vitally important for members of the LGBTQIA+ community to feel accepted in their mental health care. At Lakes Center we are taking this opportunity to serve by making changes to our website - adding visibility to, and resources for a marginalized community. You can read more about these changes in the Lakes Center News section below.

Additional resources for the LGBTQIA+ community include the Youth Pride Association, Mental Health America, and the Human Rights Campaign that help connect people to LGBTQIA+ accepting channels.

LGBTQIA+ Friendly Changes to the Lakes Center Website

Here at Lakes Center, we aim to be an inclusive and welcoming clinic for all people. Unfortunately, that is not the case everywhere. We do our best to use people’s chosen pronouns and names and honor all identities and lifestyles. Everyone here at Lakes Center is happy to work with members of the LGBTQIA+ community and their families. We also have several clinicians that have extra experience working with the LGBTQIA+ population.

Going forward we are using a symbol to make it easier to find these clinicians on our site. Look for the rainbow flag icon next to the therapist’s name on the Staff, DBT, and SPRAVATO® pages. In addition, we have added a new LGBTQIA+ section to our website that states our commitment to the community and lists all the clinicians that have the additional experience.
