Bookin' It into Summer!

RIF RAP -- June 2024

Books for Keeps School Distributions!

Celebrating Spring at Woodley Hills

A NOVA RIF book party at Fairfax County's Woodley Hills Elementary generated a ton of excitement as the children celebrated spring flowers, the month of May, and Mother's Day. After singing their library "I Love Books" song -- led by librarian and NOVA RIF liaison Jill Connors -- the pictured second graders watched an art video and then turned on their creative juices to make Mother's Day drawings to take home. The kids left the library proud of their creations and excited about their brand new NOVA RIF books.

"Planting the Seeds of Reading" at Marumsco Hills

Children at Marumsco Hills Elementary in Prince William County had a real spring treat -- making seed balls! After making a ball out of moist paper, they added three sunflower seeds in cups to take home to plant in a pot or in the ground. They listened to a presentation on why summer reading is so important (it is!) and then, due to a NOVA RIF/RIF grant, they were able to pick out two books to keep, Special thanks to RIF of NOVA liaison and librarian Jessica Nelson and reading specialist Sharon Nottingham for making so many real and "imagination" gardens grow!

A Book Field Day at ... Field Day!

A RIF NOVA/National RIF grant allowed PWC's Potomac View to stage a second spring book distribution, this time on May 17, during the school's field day. And, needless to say, the kids had a field day at field day, thanks to liaison Debbie Crawn! Along with a new book each, there were games and races and a bounce house! What's not to love! Find more photos of Books for Keeps distributions on our website -- click here -- and see how the fun happens when children choose a book or two to take home for keeps!

Books in the Community

RIF of NOVA has collected over 35,000 books from caring community members like YOU through our Gently Used Book Program! Where do the previously owned books go? Most go to NOVA RIF schools to help students build home libraries. Others go to community events throughout Northern Virginia.

Summers in Seven Corners Block Party

Rain and cloudy weather did not dampen enthusiasm at the Willston Multicultural Center in Falls Church on May 18 as over 300 books went into the hands of kids and families. Sporting raincoats, hoods, and umbrellas, the children were thrilled to see Clifford, the Big Red Dog -- who is always ready with hugs and high fives. And the parental paparazzi were on hand to capture the smiles that Clifford and fun books can generate!

Children's Summer Reading Festival

What fun for RIF of NOVA to join the Fairfax Library Foundation for its June 15 Children's Summer Reading Festival at the Woodrow Wilson Library. On a beautiful Saturday, cotton candy, balloons, music, and face painting added to the excitement of children choosing books to take home for summer reading -- thanks to the NOVA RIF Gently Used Book Donation Program!! Over a thousand books were distributed to eager young readers. And, of course, Clifford the Big Red Dog, was up to the task of delighting everyone -- that ham!!! Some Recent Book Donors...

The philanthropy committee of Vienna Moms, a social and support network for mothers in the Vienna/Oakton area, hosted a book drive in conjunction with a happy hour at the Settle Down Easy Oakton Tasting Room in May 2024. The group collected 135 gently used books for RIF NOVA while having some social fun and supporting each other in the challenging work of raising children!

Some Recent Book Takers...

In May 2024, the tutoring team at Kilby Elementary School turned out with bells on to accept a delivery of gently used books for students at that Prince William County school.

Some Special Thanks to Special Liaisons!

Liaisons are the links to getting books into the hands of children at RIF NOVA schools and programs. At the end of every school year, one liaison is chosen from each of our five geographic areas for exemplary work. The 2024 honorees are Debbie Crawn (Potomac View Elementary, Prince William County); Catherine Guthrie (Cora Kelly School for Math, Science and Technology, Alexandria); Nicole Boatwright (Teen Parenting Program, Arlington Career Center, Arlington); Sharon Goldman (FCPS PreK and Head Start, Fairfax East); and Melissa Landeverde and Kae Bieber (ACCA Child Development Center, Fairfax West). Each awardee received a bucket of children's books to augment the school library or school programming. Please find additional information about our liaisons by clicking here.
