Marina Advisory Board Advocates Dredging Wellfleet Harbor

The Wellfleet Harbor was last dredged in 2001 and over the last 14 years has become badly silted. Ideally to be properly maintained and well functioning a harbor should be dredged every 10 years. The muddy Wellfleet Harbor conditions now restrict boat traffic from an hour to two hours on either side of low tide. The Wellfleet Chamber of Commerce, the Marina Advisory Board and many others are concerned about the impact the decrease in boating traffic has on Wellfleet's fragile seasonal economy. Wellfleet has a proud and long seafaring history and is well positioned geographically to encourage nautical visitors and boating tourism.

At a price tag of around 14 million the subject of dredging Wellfleet Harbor has become politically taxing. However the tide may have finally turned for Wellfleet Harbor as the Federal government has mandated and FUNDED though the Water Resources Act 1.8 billion to dredge harbors with ten percent specifically allocated for small harbors. Welllfeet is well poised and highly qualified to be a recipient of the small harbor Federal dredging funds.

The Town of Duxbury was recently able to utilize Water Resources Act funds to fund the dredging of their Harbor. Wellfleet Board of Selectmen, Paul Pilcher, recently met with Duxbury officials hoping to follow their model to successfully dredge Wellfleet's Harbor. While the Federal government could potentially fund 50% of the project, the State would also need to fund 25% and the Town of Wellfleet 25%. The Wellfleet Harbormaster has been allocated the needed funds to begin the permitting process and feels the project is imperative to the well being of the marina.

The Wellfleet Chamber of Commerce currently has 65 businesses within walking distance of the Wellfleet Harbor that would be positively economically impacted by dredging and increased boating traffic. Dredging will also indirectly benefit other businesses that provide support services to the boating community, provide better access for our recreational and commercial fishing industry, entice more of the boating community to visit Wellfleet, and enhance Wellfleet's reputation as a premiere boating destination. The Wellfleet Chamber of Commerce urges you to email your comments and letters of support to the Marina Advisory Committee at marina@wellfleet-ma.gov.

The Wellfleet Historical Society and Museum will hold its annual Strawberry Festival on Sunday, July 5, from 2:00 - 4:00 pm in the garden behind Preservation Hall. Admission is $8.00. In case of rain, the festival will be held inside Preservation Hall. The history of the Strawberry Festival can be traced back to an article in The Advocate of June, 1912, making this event the 103rd celebration of a Wellfleet tradition. Old-fashioned strawberry shortcake will be served at this family-friendly event. Music will be provided by the 'Back of the House' Celtic session players. Other session players are invited to bring their instruments and join the session on tunes familiar to them. Dancing is encouraged! The proceeds of the Strawberry Festival will be used to renovate the newly-purchased middle section of the Wellfleet Historical Society and Museum. The restoration of the facade of the building will greatly improve the historic appearance of Wellfleet's Main Street. This acquisition nearly doubles the total space of the museum, giving the Historical Society room to archive and protect its collections, and exhibition space to bring to life the story of Wellfleet's remarkable people.
