Capital Expansion Update - June 2024 | |

JUNE 25, 2024 – Construction on the second story of Sakihiwewin Lodge is underway at 455 McDermot Ave., the future expanded home of Ka Ni Kanichihk and a gathering space for our community.
Construction began in the summer/fall of 2023, and thanks to the efforts of many dedicated individuals and partners, we’ve made great progress. When it reopens a year from now, there will be more than double the space for community to gather, learn and celebrate.
In the photo above you can see the original building peeking out of the right side of this beautiful, large addition the community has been asking for, for some time. The concrete columns and steel structure frame on the new second floor will house a cultural space, a wellness room and training rooms...

JUNE 20, 2024 – On June 20, we gathered for the 23rd annual Keeping the Fires Burning at the RBC Convention Centre in Winnipeg. The event was a success, with over 800 community members, relatives, friends, family, and honoured guests in attendance.
This year’s theme was Gichi-Anishinaabeg Ogikendaasowin: Gikino’amaage Abinoojiyag Dago Zaagi’idiiwin, or, Intergenerational Love: Learning from our Elders. The theme was inspired by the vigilance, guidance, and commitment of Elders and Knowledge Keepers in maintaining and advocating for the teachings, ceremonies, and traditional ways of being that are passed down to the children and youth of Indigenous communities everywhere...

CN & Unifor donate $50,000 to
Butterfly Club & Sister's Circle programs

MAY 29, 2024 – Ka Ni Kanichihk is thrilled to announce a generous donation of $50,000 to our Butterfly Club and Sister’s Circle programs from the Canadian National Railway Company and the Unifor Social Justice Fund. Each organization contributed $25,000, underscoring their commitment to supporting Indigenous young women and girls in our community.
The Butterfly Club and Sister’s Circle are vital programs that nurture the growth, strength, and cultural pride of our young women and girls. JUNE 25, 2024 – This past month, Ka Ni Kanichihk partnered with Kinsmen Jackpot Bingo as one of their feature charities of choice for June.
Through June, if you tuned in to the Kinsmen Jackpot Bingo broadcast each Saturday at 5:30 p.m. on CTV Winnipeg and YouTube live, you might have seen Ka Ni Kanichihk featured during the program. We are so excited to have this opportunity to promote the work we do in the community, and to have this platform to encourage such valuable donations to our many programs and services.

Between the Pipes co-author donates upcoming proceeds to Velma's House

Between the Pipes, an upcoming 2S graphic novel by Albert McLeod, Dr. Elaine Mordoch, Sonya Ballantyne, and illustrated by Alice RL. The novel will release September 10 of this year. | |
JUNE 27, 2024 – We would like to take a moment to thank Dr. Elaine Mordoch, co-author of Between the Pipes, an upcoming Two-Spirit graphic novel, for donating her proceeds from the novel’s sales to Velma’s House 24/7 Safe Space, located at 566 Bannatyne Avenue in Winnipeg.

APRIL 5, 2024 – On April 5, we hosted our 10th annual Heart Medicine Gathering at the Viscount Gort Hotel.
This year’s theme was Love Poetry for Indigenous Women.
We would like to thank everyone who came out to the event, and thank you to everyone who helped make it so memorable! There were prizes, all sorts of activity stations like button and jewelry making, and lots of laughter (including laughing yoga!) and love. We would also like to thank our amazing keynote speaker Tenille K Campbell, and our master of ceremonies/host Tracey Leost for their attendance and contributions...
