HEAT ADVISORY ALERT!
Attention, Watershed farming community! With the heat advisory in effect this week, it's crucial to keep our large animals cool and safe. Here are some essential tips to help your horses, cattle, and other large animals beat the heat:
1. Provide Plenty of Water
Make sure your animals have constant access to clean, cool water. Dehydration can happen quickly in high temperatures.
2. Offer Shade
Ensure there is ample shaded area where your animals can escape the sun. Trees, shelters, or shade cloths can provide much-needed relief.
3. Adjust Feeding Times
Feed during cooler parts of the day, such as early morning or late evening, to prevent heat stress.
4. Use Fans and Ventilation
If possible, use fans to increase airflow in barns and stables. Good ventilation can significantly reduce heat buildup.
5. Hose Them Down
Spraying your animals with cool water can help lower their body temperature. Focus on areas like the neck and legs.
6. Avoid Overworking
Limit strenuous activities during the hottest parts of the day. Exercise early in the morning or late in the evening when it's cooler.
7. Monitor for Signs of Heat Stress
Watch for symptoms like heavy panting, excessive drooling, lethargy, or unsteady gait. If you notice any of these signs, take immediate action to cool your animal and contact us for assistance.
