CVA Commencement 2024

On June 1 the CVA community gathered to celebrate the graduation of the class of 2024 in a commencement ceremony held in the Richard Bell Chapel at Sugarloaf Mountain. The ceremony opened with an invocation from Reverend Dr. Pamela Morse followed by welcoming remarks from Head of School, Kate Webber Punderson '89.

"Today, we come together to celebrate a significant milestone in your lives - a culmination of hard work, perseverance, and countless memorable experiences," Kate addressed the graduating seniors. "You've ventured all across the globe, woken up at the crack of dawn, embraced the challenges brought by a global pandemic, and dedicated countless hours to studying while simultaneously training for your next big event. Through it all, you have been each other's biggest supporters, pushing one another to do things you couldn't have done on your own. No matter the predicament, every one of you has stood strong against adversity, and the challenges you have faced have shaped you and prepared you for lives of service and leadership."

This year's Commencement speech was delivered by former CVA student, Colonel Warren C. Cook, Jr., known to his friends as Bunge and hailing from Freeman Ridge in Kingfield, Maine.

"Gathered here today, in this chapel, I am deeply honored and privileged to address you on this momentous occasion," Cook began. "Thank you for this honor."

"Graduating CVA means you've already demonstrated that you can do hard things in hard places," Cook told the graduating seniors. "And it makes sense that people who thrive in the mountains thrive in leadership - who else voluntarily strips most of their clothes off at the top of a mountain in the bitter cold, racing down a sheet of ice. Who does that? CVA graduates. The world needs you to do more hard things in hard places - and leadership is hard."

Other speakers at the ceremony included Valedictorian, Charlie Koenig, and Salutatorian, Caleb Stefanakos, along with Senior Class Choice Speaker, Adam Hamblet, and Faculty Choice Speaker, Maggie Swain. During the ceremony the seniors dedicated the 2024 yearbook to Gary LaChance, a beloved former employee of CVA who has been a dear friend to our Big Dog for many years.

Two juniors and three seniors were also presented with awards:

Jack Egan '25 received the CVA Alumni Association Award. Established in 1993, this scholarship is designated to a rising senior who exhibits a strong and steady character, reliability, a consistently positive attitude, and respect for others; one who has a proven commitment to “doing their best” academically, athletically, and in the school community...a good, solid, CVA citizen.

Sullivan Platte '25 received the J. Keith Penninger Memorial Fund Award. This annual tuition award was established in 1998 in memory of J. Keith Penninger, Class of ’96, who died in a tragic car accident in January of 1997. Chosen by current seniors and faculty members, the junior who best represents CVA in terms of leadership and commitment to the CVA mission and community is selected for this award.

Caleb Stefanakos '24 was awarded the John Ritzo Headmaster's Award. This is given to the CVA student who has best-exhibited leadership qualities and has made the most contribution to the betterment of the school and the local community.

Jack Velenchik '24 received the David Holmes Most Improved Student Award. This award was established by former math/science teacher David Holmes to honor the student who has shown the most growth over the course of his or her time at CVA.

Charlie Koenig '24 was awarded the Benjamin Weisbein Academic Award. This award is made possible by the family of former CVA student Ben Weisbein, who was killed in a tragic car accident in the summer of 1992. This award is presented to a CVA graduate who best exemplifies those qualities that Ben possessed: superb athleticism, a tireless work ethic, high academic standing, and the admiration of his peers.

Congratulations to all our graduates:

Bodhi Böschen, Sullivan Butler, Stephen Cramm, Boden Gerry, Adam Hamblet, Hayden Hoffmann, Charlie Koenig, Bora Kumuk, Amy Latendresse, Chase Littlefield, Mitchell Marquis, Natalee McKenzie, Brendan O’Connor, Caleb Stefanakos, Maggie Swain, William Trudeau, Jack Velenchik

The H. King Cummings Service Award

During Commencement CVA Board of Trustees Chair, Lindy MacKinnon Gruen '92, took a moment to recognize Head of School, Kate Webber Punderson '89, for her years of dedication to CVA. Kate, who is stepping down as Head of School at the end of this year, was presented with the H. King Cummings Service Award. This award was established in 1989 and is given to an individual or individuals within the CVA community who have performed valuable service beyond the normal expectations and have made an outstanding contribution to the growth and development of Carrabassett Valley Academy. In its inaugural year, this award was presented to Kate's parents, Martha and Peter Webber, bringing extra meaning to the moment.

Senior Banquet

On the eve of graduation, the CVA senior class gathered with family and friends to celebrate their successes and memories with one another at the annual Senior Banquet.

The evening kicked off with the traditional reading of the "I Believe" poem. Each spring at CVA seniors are asked to share their beliefs in an “I Believe” poem. As a way to introduce the Class of 2024, a small part of each student's poem is combined into a spoken poem at the banquet.

CVA parent and Big Dog cheerleader, Rachelle Cummings, offered a toast on behalf of senior parents, and senior, Nattee McKenzie, was chosen as the student speaker to address the audience. This year's senior gift, a sand spike ball court outside of the Atrium, was presented by Boden Gerry. Chad Hamblet '18 offered remarks on behalf of the CVA Alumni Association.

"Think back to all those ridiculous workouts you conquered and crushed, the classes you managed to stay awake for after training all morning, think of all the things CVA provided that you will never be able to replicate," Chad told the graduating seniors. "It will sound cliche, but trust me, you will realize that the tools you have acquired at CVA [will be] incredibly useful in life."

The evening concluded with the presentation of the Denny Flag Award and the senior slideshow created by Adam Hamblet.

The Denny Flag Award

CVA presents a very special award each year during the Senior Banquet, the Denny Flag Award. This award was established in 2015 by former CVA Trustee and alumni parents, Jim and Priscilla Denny, whose son, Chris, graduated from CVA in 1987. Recipients of this award are presented with the actual flag that has flown on the CVA campus for the past year to honor their leadership and contributions to the CVA community. This year, two seniors were presented with this award - Chase Littlefield and Boden Gerry.

"Both of these seniors are visible leaders on the CVA campus and in the greater community of their respective sports," Kate Webber Punderson '89 stated when presenting the award. "(Chase) is our fearless student body president who leads us through daily school meetings with energy and enthusiasm, and (Boden) has contributed greatly, not only to his team, but to the larger community of snowboarding."

2024 Big Dog Awards

On the final day of Spring Term, students, family members, coaches, faculty, and staff gathered at the Carrabassett Valley Anti Gravity Complex to recognize Big Dogs from all grades and disciplines with academic and athletic awards.

"Big Dogs - I am so proud of each and everyone of you," said Head of School Kate Webber Punderson '89, in her opening remarks. "It is because of you that CVA has had such an exceptional year. By placing effort over outcome, by trusting the process and giving it your all, you each reached many personal bests on the mountain and in the classroom."

Bruce Miles, Executive Director of the Sugarloaf Ski Club, presented the Virginia "Ginny" Bousum CVA Tuition Scholarship Award to Rocco Lazzaro. This is an athletic merit scholarship awarded annually in memory of former ski club President and long-time CVA supporter and volunteer, Ginny Bousum.

Book Awards were selected by CVA faculty and presented to the following juniors:

Mia Bruno received the St. Lawrence Book Award, given to high school juniors who have distinguished themselves in their communities by their significant commitment to community service.

Skye Folger David received the Clarkson University Leadership Award, given to a junior who “demonstrates leadership and outstanding academic achievement.”

Shire Cosby was awarded the University of Rochester Susan B. Anthony Award, given to a junior who demonstrates commitment to understanding and addressing difficult social issues, demonstrates leadership and dedication to community action, and has strong grades and rigorous courses in the humanities and social sciences.

The luncheon continued with the presentation of academic awards for each grade and class, including a recognition of the students with the highest GPA for the 2023-2024 school year in each grade: Wynn Stern (middle school), Luise Rueter (9th grade), Lauren Waskowitz (10th grade), and Jack Egan (11th grade).

Government Class Holds Mock Election

The senior Government class at CVA got hands-on experience with the election process, simulating how political parties drive campaigns and elections. The class divided into groups to create three different political parties. They created party platforms, addressing six key issues they wanted to improve. They nominated candidates, wrote inspiring campaign speeches, and campaigned for votes. Additionally, students took on the role of Secretary of State to register as many voters as possible.

ATHLETICS

May On-Snow Training

The CVA Alpine FIS Men took to the slopes in Colorado this May, getting a jump start on their on-snow training for next season. The athletes focused on technique, breaking old habits and creating new ones. Balancing intense training sessions at Loveland in the mornings with exciting activities in the afternoons, they made the most of every moment.

The Women's Alpine FIS team headed to Zermatt, Switzerland in May for an unforgettable on-snow training camp with World Cup athlete and owner of Davenport Alpine, Ashley Davenport Sargent. A Big Dog thank you to the Manheim family for planning this training trip for our athletes!

Emergency Preparedness

In May, CVA coaches, Anti Gravity Center (AGC) staff, members of the Town of Carrabassett Valley Fire Department, and NorthStar EMS participated in an Emergency Action Plan (EAP) training at the AGC to rehearse emergency first response scenarios in the event of an injury. The focus of the training was on spinal injuries and covered proper techniques for back-boarding and evacuating an injured athlete from the AGC trampolines and skate bowl.

Thank you to CVA Athletic Trainer, Tristy Wolfe, for setting up this critical training. The safety of our athletes and coaches is a priority at CVA. In addition to this training, CVA coaches also attend EAP training in the Winter for on-snow emergencies, and receive training in first aid, CPR, Stop the Bleed, suicide prevention, and concussion.

Spring Sports

The Big Dogs made the most of the post-season by soaking up the sun and participating in spring sports. Options this year included: Field Games, Fly Fishing, Golf, Mountain Biking/Hiking, Tennis, and Trampoline & Skate.

For their final group outing of the school year, the Middle School sports group hit Higgins Beach in Scarborough, Maine for an awesome day of surfing, skim boarding, beach games, and bonding!
