Quote of the Month
Q: What did you learn about American Culture during your visit that you didn't know before?

A: The caring spirit that goes beyond the line of duty in the name of humanity; the culture of volunteerism in the name of human rights. I would never have imagined to be invited to the house of the Vice President and be hosted by his wife Dr. Jill Biden!

-- Vicky NTETEMA, International Women of Courage awardee, and Executive Director, Under the Same Sun, Tanzania
IVCLA Went to Kyrgyzstan!
IVCLA members with alum Nurkhat Imankulova in front of a traditional yurt

IVCLA's first international travel program was a wonderful trip experiencing the unique sights and sounds of Kyrgyzstan. Through the remarkable arrangements made by IVCLA's Sr. Program Officer Natalia Lvovich and Open World facilitator Cholpon Bakirova in Kyrgyzstan, the six L.A. participants enjoyed private tours of historic museums, the magnificent vistas of the Kyrgyzstan countryside and delightful opportunities to interact with IVCLA's exchange program alumni. In a beautiful role-reversal, the hosts became the hosted as our group had the chance to share an authentic Kyrgyz dinner in the home of a visitor alumni.

Welcome New Intern!

We are excited to welcome our new summer Communications & Events intern! Sharika Kaul just graduated from Scripps College with a B.A in Politics and International Relations and minor in Media Studies. Sharika was born in Jammu, India and grew up in New Delhi, Mumbai, Singapore, and Shanghai! Having grown up in such an international milieu, Sharika especially values cross-cultural education and strongly believes we can learn best through the lived experiences of others. A dditionally, Sharika's international background also contextualizes her interest for learning different languages: in addition to English, Sharika is fluent in Mandarin, Hindi, and Kashmiri. As Sharika's core passions center on social justice issues pertaining to women (specifically the topic of sexual and gender-based violence), she has already had the chance to meet some of the incredible leaders IVCLA has hosted from India earlier this year, and therefore is thrilled to be working for an organization that is dedicated to creating a space for valuable global collaborations!

You can be part of an exciting international movement! Join other teens from across Los Angeles, who will be using their media skills to make a difference in our world. In a four day L.A. Summit, 75 young filmmakers will come together to create seven short films about how young people can help fight the most pressing issues of our time: poverty, violence, discrimination, health, environment, women's rights and youth empowerment. You will connect via video conference to the 12th International Youth Media Summit in Nepal where young people from 20 countries will be creating short films about the same issues. It will be an intense, exciting four days that can open doors for careers and connections around the globe!

If you are a student with a strong desire to shape the future and a curious mind to learn new ways to do that; and you have skills in filmmaking, animation, diplomacy, public speaking, writing or art, apply!
