Authors Share Book-Inspired Fare

Thanks to authors Ashley Elston and Meredith May who recently shared book club menus for our readers.

Ashley Elston's psychological thriller First Lie Wins is the story of a woman fighting to keep her identity a secret.

From Ashley Elston: "For First Lie Wins, anything Southern works! More specifically, there is a scene where Evie and Ryan are at a Kentucky Derby watch party where they are served Hot Browns, cheese grits, tea sandwiches, and Mint Juleps!"

The Honey Bus: A Memoir of Loss, Courage and a Girl Saved by Bees is Meredith May's s story about finding a home in the most unusual of places and how a tiny, little-understood insect could save a life.

From Meredith May: "The setting for The Honey Bus is the California Central Coast where, in the 1970s, I was raised by my beekeeper Grandpa who harvested honey inside a rusting World War II Army bus in the backyard.

The Honey Bus menu is a mash-up of Grandpa’s favorite foods: vegetables and berries from his garden, and some early-era processed foods that seemed like miracles of culinary science at the time—and of course, his honey.

He loved to smear soft blue cheese on a Ritz cracker, top it with a walnut from the row of walnut trees lining his driveway, and then drizzle it with honey before popping it in his mouth.

Grandpa’s Big Sur bees produced black sage honey, an almost clear, 'water-white' honey that doesn’t crystallize, from the highly aromatic shrubs that grow in the dry, rocky hills of California. It has an aroma of balsamic and resin, and flavors of smoky candied fruit and butterscotch, with a mentholated kick at the end. Black sage honey is rare and hard to find, sought after by honey aficionados, but any honey will suffice. Pair the hors d'oeuvres with Granny’s favorite drink—a Manhattan with a maraschino cherry, or a honey lemonade mocktail with a sprig of mint."
