MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

As we welcome June, I'm excited to share how our dedication to impactful projects and strong advocacy continues to drive BOMA/GLA's success.

Last month, I had the honor of attending The People Concern Gala with several members. This inspiring event raised essential funds to fight homelessness in Los Angeles. Our participation highlighted our commitment to social responsibility and showed the power of working together to tackle one of our city's biggest issues. Thank you to everyone who contributed and attended.

Looking ahead, we are thrilled to announce our upcoming Back to School Drive in partnership with Building Skills Partnership. This initiative aims to provide essential school supplies to children in need. I encourage all members to register their buildings to participate. Your involvement will make a significant difference, helping students start the school year prepared and confident.

Turning to an important topic, advocacy is crucial for our association. This legislative season has already brought significant challenges for the commercial real estate industry. With the current economic climate, it's essential that we stay vigilant in our grassroots efforts. To help, we will soon introduce a new platform to enhance our advocacy initiatives, making it easier for members to stay informed and take action on critical issues.

I also want to stress the importance of supporting our advocacy programs, like BOMA at the Bowl. This 11th Annual event is not only a chance to enjoy a fantastic performance by the legendary group Boys II Men, but also a vital fundraiser for our Political Action Committee (PAC). All proceeds support BOMA/GLA's advocacy work, which shapes the policies affecting our industry.

Thank you for your ongoing dedication and support. Together, we are making a lasting impact on our community and ensuring a brighter future for commercial real estate in Los Angeles.

Bridging Gaps: BSP's Fair Connects Workers to Educational Resources

BOMA/GLA partners with Building Skills Partnership to support the education of lower-income workers and their families. Recently, BSP organized a College & Community Resource Fair for workers and their families right outside their DTLA office. This event offered comprehensive information on the various resources they provide to property service workers, extending beyond their work environments.

The goal was to educate the community on how to engage in their children's education and help make their college aspirations a reality. During the fair, property service workers and their families participated in activities that focused on understanding the educational system, exploring trade skill opportunities, and learning about scholarships. Numerous organizations were in attendance to share information on accessing higher education resources, including Innovate Public Schools, the Los Angeles Fire Department, Los Angeles City College, Labor Community Services, and more. Additionally, food was distributed to attendees, providing essential support to those in need.

BOMA/GLA members are encouraged to get involved in future community initiatives like this. If you would like more information on how you can get involved, please contact BSP here or Shannon Cain.

Vincent Unplugged: Insights and Experience from a BOMA Greater Los Angeles Veteran

"I was first introduced to BOMA/GLA in 2009 after transitioning from a 26-year active military career to a high-profile security director position with ABM Security Services and Thomas Properties Group. During those first few years of losing my “sea legs” and finding my footing in the civilian workforce, it was the friendly and knowledgeable members of the BOMA/GLA team, especially Martha Cox-Nitikman and the BOMA Security Council members, who were incredibly helpful. They assisted me with my professional development, helped me earn the LAFD High-Rise Fire Safety Certificate of Fitness, supported my successful leadership of a team of over 70 security professionals, and inspired me to pursue a property manager position in downtown Los Angeles. It is hard to imagine how I would have advanced from there to here without BOMA/GLA!"

California Legislature, don’t limit how much an office cleaner can do in an hour | Opinion by Michele Ware

Since the COVID-19 pandemic, California’s downtown commercial corridors have struggled to rebound and recover. The rise in remote work and decline in tourism have made economic recovery particularly challenging in Los Angeles, Sacramento, and San Francisco, which has ranked as the slowest downtown to recover in North America.

But just when we thought California’s downtown economic recovery couldn’t get any worse, Assemblymember Luz Rivas, D-San Fernando, introduced Assembly Bill 2364. The bill would skyrocket the costs to clean buildings throughout the state by imposing a first-ever limit on how many square-feet of floors a worker can clean in any given hour.
