WHAT DID THE PRIESTS DO
AT THE CLERGY STUDY WEEK?
Dear Parishioners and Friends,
All the priests of the Diocese of San Jose participated in our annual study week from May 13 to 16 at San Juan Bautista. I think it is very important for me to share with you the Parish Staff, Councils, and Parishioners what we did during our Clergy Study Week this year. So, I thought of writing this message.
This year’s study week’s focal point was the implementation of the Diocesan Pastoral Plan. During the study week:
- We worked as a presbyterate to learn from other dioceses how we can share resources in a way that increases Spiritual Renewal for our diocese and builds capacity to meet our six priorities of the Diocesan Pastoral Plan.
- We learned about a model being used, ‘Family of Parishes,’ in London Diocese, Canada to respond to some of their needs as they walked through their pastoral plan implementation process.
- We discussed in detail our own Pastoral Plan. We shared about our hopes, dreams, fears, and challenges and discussed solutions towards success.
- We discerned using a Synodal Method to discuss how can we begin to collaborate in parish/school groups both in ministry and with staffing. Some of the ideas and recommendations that came forward are:
a. Identifying 2-3 parishes to work together.
b. Ministerial areas in coordinating RCIA, Youth, Retreats, and
other ministries together.
c. Sharing staffing in areas of music, liturgy, spiritual direction,
and/or administrative functions.
In order to facilitate efficient and effective ministry, we cannot work based on narrow parochial thinking anymore. So, collaborative model must emerge at least in certain ministries. Our ministry cannot be in competition with other parishes but should form disciples and facilitate it collaboratively. We minister as one Church with one mission! We are not sure what that model will be called. It could be ‘Family of Parishes’ or any other. However, the modus operandi must change to be a community of living faith. We look forward to changes not just for the sake of change, but for the sake of active, vibrant, church of missionary discipleship.
Looking forward with hope,
Fr. Saju
