What’s New for 2023-2024: Paperless Progress Reports
Starting with the 2023-2024 School year, during the online student confirmation process, the District is going to ask you if you want to continue to receive a printed progress report via mail. You will still automatically receive a printed report card at the end of each semester with final grades for that semester by mail. Progress reports will only be sent electronically unless:
- You choose to continue receiving them by mail during the Summer Census process
- Your student has a D or F
How can I view my student’s grades?
In addition to being able to access grades at any time, you will also receive an email alerting you every six weeks that your student’s progress report and / or final end of semester report card is available for viewing. These grades can be viewed at any time by logging into Canvas. Your login will be the same login you use for ParentSquare.
Need help?
If you have any questions or need help during the 2023-2024 School Year we will have a dedicated staff member at the District Office to help you learn how to access your student’s grades from August 7 - October 27.

Both San Mateo and Burlingame High Schools Hosted Groundbreaking Ceremonies in May to kick off the start of construction on their new gymnasiums.
Construction of the San Mateo High gym will include a new building totaling approximately 20,085 square feet to be constructed on the site of the existing tennis courts. The new facility will include a gym area, team and training rooms, classrooms and additional support spaces. Designed by longtime District partners Quattrocchi Kwok Architects and managed by Greystone West, the new gym will bring San Mateo High into greater parity with other District schools, meeting the needs of the student body as well as the larger community.
Construction of the new Burlingame High gym includes a new building totaling approximately 37,492 square feet to be constructed on the site of the existing gym. Designed by longtime District partner Quattrocchi Kwok Architects and managed by Greystone West, the project replaces an outdated facility and includes a main gym and an auxiliary gym on the second floor of the new building as well as locker rooms, physical education offices, a wrestling facility, lobby, storage and support spaces.

Burlingame High Student Featured by CNN for Advocating for More Asian American History
Burlingame High Student Jaslene Lai (pictured) was recently interviewed by CNN in regards to her group AAPI Youth Rising and the one-day lesson plan on Asian American History they created for schools.
From the article, "...two years after Lai and a group of friends were horrified by Covid-era anti-Asian hate, and the lack of Asian American history taught in their classes, prompting them to create a one-day lesson plan on Asian American history that they can teach fellow students. Their group, AAPI Youth Rising, recognized that education is the key to combatting racism. She attributes comments like the ones made by her classmate to ignorance, some of which may result from the lack of such history taught in schools."

Mills Student Recognized in Congressional Arts Competition
Mills High School student, Lucas Du, was announced as second place winner in Congressman Kevin Mullin’s District's 2023 Congressional Art Competition. His artwork is titled Hope.
"The inspiration for this piece comes from the impact of COVID-19 on many lives. In the middle of the artwork is a girl cradling a lamb. She is standing in front of a snowy mountain range, on barren land with a pathway behind her. The smile depicted on her face shows optimism in life. The girl and the lamb symbolize hope that everyone can be resilient and persevere through this year, " Lucas noted about his artwork.

Hillsdale's Empowerment Through Action and SMUHSD Mental Health and Wellness Program Recognized with Kent Awards | |
|
The San Mateo County School Boards Association (SMCSBA), representing 23 school districts, the San Mateo Community College District, and the San Mateo County Office of Education, presented its 2023 Kent Awards on May 19, 2023.
Congratulations to Hillsdale High School's Empowerment Through Action (ETA) Program and SMUHSD Mental Health and Wellness Program for both being recipients of 2023 Kent Awards.
The awards are given to outstanding and innovative programs either in the classroom or outside the classroom as well as district-wide programs. Award winning programs promote student success, employ a high degree of creativity, and demonstrate transferability.
ETA acts as an MTSS Tier 2 support for two hundred of Hillsdale’s historically underserved students. The program consists of empowerment-affinity groups, a Community Resource Center, enrichment activities, job and career training, parent education, and the Peace Pantry, which supports families with food scarcity. The mission of the Empowerment Through Action Program, launched in September 2019, is to close the achievement gap and foster belonging for our students through a series of empowering actions to enhance achievement in the following areas: social and emotional growth, academic growth, development of self-confidence and inner capital, social connection, and job and internship placement.
SMUHSD's Mental Health and Wellness Team (in partnership with SMUSHD Student Services) secured a Learning Communities For School Success Program (LCSSP) $2 million consortium grant focused on improving attendance for high schools and future high schoolers in middle schools. With this grant, SMUHSD was able to hire three Social Workers.
Named after past San Mateo County Superintendent of Schools, J. Russell Kent, SMCSBA initiated the program in the 1980-81 school year. Learn more about the Kent Awards.

Living Schoolyard Month: Bridge Biodiversity and Sustainability Garden and Hillsdale’s Community Garden
May was Living Schoolyard Month! The San Mateo County Office of Education’s Environmental Literacy and Sustainability Initiative recently highlighted the recipients of its Living Schoolyard Grant program - including our very own Bridge Biodiversity and Sustainability Garden and Hillsdale High School’s Community Garden (in support of HHS Peace Pantry) projects.
The grant program was established to recognize that supporting the development of living schoolyards is an equitable way to provide regular access to high quality green spaces for every student at a school site.
Living Schoolyard Month is an annual celebration of green school grounds that was first established in 2014 as part of a California state resolution to promote the design and construction of outdoor green spaces for all students in K-12 public schools. A living schoolyard allows students and educators to spend restorative time in nature and engage in place-based learning. Additionally, living schoolyard elements can increase local biodiversity, benefit natural habitats, and integrate natural systems into the built environment.
Learn more about the 2022-23 Living Schoolyard Grant Program.
Read the highlights below about each of the gardens:
Peninsula High School Bridge Program
The Bridge Garden Project is designed, built, and maintained by students. The garden has become the cornerstone of the English Learner Introduction to Science class at the Bridge English Language Development Program, a program of Peninsula High School. Much of the curriculum around the garden this year focused on the role of healthy soils in climate resilience. Next year, the school hopes to expand impact and curricular ties to the garden in the areas of ecosystem ecology, cycling of matter and energy, and other sustainability topics. This grant allowed them to purchase two iPads that are being used to document building the garden and for delivering the garden-based curriculum.
Hillsdale High School
The Hillsdale High School Community Garden contributes fruits and vegetables to their Peace Pantry that feeds 130 school families every week. Through partnership with Each Green Corner, Second Harvest Food Bank, Empowerment Through Action, and community volunteers, they have expanded the garden to grow seasonal vegetables and maximize their yield. With the grant money, they have also put benches in the garden under the shade of an oak tree for students or staff to enjoy during class or break time.
