Child Development Center Recognized with 5-Star Rating for First Time

For the first time in the Child Development Center’s 31-year history at Western Nevada College, the center has received a 5-star program rating. The 5-star recognition for the CDC comes from the Nevada Silver State Stars Quality Rating and Improvement System (QRIS). As a 5-star child care center, the CDC has demonstrated and documented quality indicators above licensing regulation requirements.

Assistant Financial Aid Director Fulfills WASFAA Leadership Training Program

Ambra Reed of Western Nevada College's Financial Aid Office has devoted part of the past year advancing her leadership skills. Reed recently completed the Western Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators (WASFAA) Leadership Development Program. The program assists professionals such as Reed craft and fine-tune their skills as a leader, which, in turn, will benefit WNC, Nevada, higher education and the WASFAA region.

442 Students Honored on Dean's List

Students at Western Nevada College performed exceptionally well in the classroom during the Spring 2024 semester. In fact, 442 students have earned academic recognition for making the Dean’s List. The total number of academic achievers is only exceeded by the 487 students on the Fall 2023 Dean’s List and the 461 students on the Fall 2022 Dean’s List.

Summer Grads Must Apply by June 28

Admissions & Records has extended the summer graduation application deadline through Friday. Students on track for a degree or a certificate of achievement are required to submit an application at wnc.edu/graduation. The cost is $25.

Wildcat Reserve Food & Hygiene Pantry Open through Summer

Wildcat Reserve will continue to be open this summer. WNC's food and hygiene pantry helps students and their families overcome food insecurity. To utilize the pantry, fill out the required forms at wnc.edu/wildcat-life/food-pantry.

Artwork from Student Art Show on Display in Fresh Outlook 2024 at Brick

If you missed the 2024 Student Art Show during spring semester, the Capital City Arts Initiative is presenting many of the students' artwork in the Fresh Outlook 2024 exhibit now on display at the Brick, 108 E. Proctor St. in Carson City. View the exhibit Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to noon and 1 to 4 p.m. through Aug. 15. The free exhibition features artwork by 19 students from WNC.

Games and Gambling the Focus of Current Bristlecone Gallery Exhibit

Through Sept. 12, visitors can view the "Big Deal" exhibit by artist Joan Arrizabalaga in the Bristlecone Art Gallery at Western Nevada College. Presented by the Capital City Arts Initiative, the exhibit is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m.

"Sun-ny" dispositions prevailed on the first day of summer at Jack C. Davis Observatory, which overlooks WNC's Carson City campus. Community members took time out of their busy schedules to learn more about the Sun and celebrate the Summer Solstice at the observatory.

Construction Management Professor Profiled by Newspaper on Father's Day

The Nevada Appeal profiled WNC Construction Management Professor Nigel Harrison and his family for Father's Day. Harrison earned a Bachelor's degree in Construction Management from WNC and recently earned tenure.

Child Development Center Celebrates Graduation of 18 Preschool Children

At Western Nevada College, the excitement of graduation season wasn’t limited to college and high school students. WNC's Child Development Center (CDC) held its annual Preschool Graduation, celebrating the achievements of 18 young children. The CDC plays a crucial role in preparing children for kindergarten by focusing on their cognitive development, language skills, physical growth, literacy, mathematics, socialization, and more.

WNC Alum Narrowly Misses Qualifying for Summer Olympics in Paris

Krysta Palmer, a 2014 graduate of WNC, placed third in the 3-meter springboard diving event at the Olympic Trials on June 22 in Knoxville, Tenn. Sarah Bacon and Alison Gibson finished just ahead of Palmer to secure the U.S.'s Olympic berths in the event. Earlier, Palmer and Gibson finished second in the synchro springboard event. Only the top team qualified for the Olympics. Palmer won the bronze medal in 3-meter springboard diving at the 2021 Games in Tokyo.

CDL Training Sessions Available

on Carson City, Fallon Campuses

Western Nevada College’s Commercial Driver’s License Prep courses can provide quick access to a new, well-paying career on the road. The upcoming Class A CDL training sessions on WNC’s Carson City and Fallon campuses are Aug. 12 through Sept. 13 and Nov. 4 through Dec. 13.

WNC to Host Tahoe Rim Trail

Endurance Runs on July 20-21

Billed as "A Glimpse of Heaven ... A Taste of Hell," the Tahoe Rim Trail Endurance Runs are providing ultradistance runners with familiar starting and finishing lines for the July 20-21 event: Western Nevada College's John L. Harvey Field. Ultrarunners compete in 100-mile, 56-mile and 55-kilometer events, ascending as much as 22,000 feet from Carson City to Marlette Lake before returning to Carson City.
