An update to the Wastewater Treatment Plant

One hundred years ago, in conjunction with the new El Escalante Hotel on Main Street, the first water meters were installed in Cedar City. The sewer system was also expanded, and the city campground's cesspool (now Main Street Park) collapsed. Everything changes and everything stays the same.

Today, the City is taking two major steps in our water and sewer system.

A new “pile cloth filter” system is being engineered and contracted for the Wastewater Treatment Plant. The new filter will convert our Type 2 effluent wastewater into Type 1 effluent. We will be piping this water to the Airport Road area where it can be distributed in existing systems to water lawns at the University and our high schools, parks, ball fields, cemetery and hopefully the golf course. The City owns extensive shares in irrigation companies from Coal Creek water and we plan to add that water to increase the supply for municipal and school “grass”, not “weed grass.”

I have also proposed we purchase our first radio read water meter receiving system. This gadget will be placed on a high point (like the top of a water tank) and it can read water meters in the barrels of homes and businesses within its reach. Then we will concentrate our new meters to change all the meters within its reach to the new receiver thus saving time and expense of reading. We are also told that customers can view their usage on the internet.

Exciting times as we continue working towards providing the best water service possible.

-Mayor Garth O. Green

ANNUAL IRRIGATION RESTRICTIONS IN EFFECT

Per City Ordinance 37-7.1, water restrictions on irrigating with culinary water between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. go into effect on April 1, 2024 and will continue through October 31, 2024.

This restriction is enforced every day of the week to conserve our water during the warmer months. Failure to comply will result in violations:

  1. 1st violation - Warning.
  2. 2nd violation - Water supply shut off and $25.00 reconnection fee.
  3. 3rd violation - Water supply shut off, $25.00 reconnection fee, and $100.00 penalty.

All fines and penalties shall be paid in full prior to the restoration of water service. Please be mindful of conserving our water resources. For more information on water conservation, click here.

If you would like to have your water meter turned off before you turn on the Stop-and-Waste sprinkler system, contact Public Works at (435) 568-2912. Please do not go into your meter barrel by yourself. The meter must be turned off and on by an authorized city water division employee.

ANNUAL WATER RATE INCREASE

As a reminder, water customers will see a slight increase in water rates beginning July 1, 2024. The base rate is not increasing, but the second tier of water usage is increasing.

An annual water rate increase was approved every July 1st beginning in 2022 and ending in 2025 for single and multi-family residential, and through 2026 for non-residential.

CELEBRATE SAFELY AND RESPONSIBLY WITH FIREWORKS

Celebrate safely this 4th of July by following these very important guidelines and laws established by officials from the State of Utah, Cedar City Fire Department and Cedar City, as it protects you, your neighbors, and our natural surroundings.

There are few places where fireworks are allowed in Cedar City. Fireworks are always prohibited in areas designated as Wildland Urban Interface (WUI) and in the unincorporated areas of Iron County. Areas in the WUI are located near the mountains and forests and are extremely high fire danger areas.

When conditions make the risk of wildfire extremely high, many areas will not allow firework use of any kind. To view the map displaying where fireworks are prohibited, CLICK HERE.

In Utah, some fireworks are illegal. Generally, if they are sold by a verified vendor in Utah, they are legal to use in Utah. If you are not able to purchase the firework in Utah, it is not legal to light that firework in Utah at any time. Firework sales are from June 24 to July 25.

Recommended locations to use legal fireworks within Cedar City limits include:

  • The south parking lot of Cedar High School
  • The parking lot at the Bicentennial Softball Complex
  • The Iron Springs Elementary parking lot
  • The Canyon View High School parking lot
  • The Aquatic Center parking lot
  • The street between the Bicentennial Soccer Complex parking lots (the streets will be closed to traffic for the discharge dates.)

When using fireworks, please dispose of them properly in a bucket of water.

The Cedar City Fire Department is planning their annual firework show on 4th of July, pending any weather conditions or unforeseen circumstances, beginning around 10 p.m.. It is the safest way to enjoy fireworks, with the launching point at the Airport.

Abiding by the legal firework discharge dates and times is crucial to keeping our community safe, including any neighbors and pets who are sensitive to loud noises:

July 2 - July 5 from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m.

(July 4 hours extended to midnight)

PROTECT OUR SEWER SYSTEM

Contrary to popular belief, the City Sewer System is not just a series of pipes, but rather a complex system requiring a great amount of science and skill to manage.

Illegal dumping of hazardous materials and other non-hazardous liquid/solid wastes into our City Sewer harms the environment, the Wastewater Treatment Facility, and puts City employees and the public at risk.

If you see someone illegally dumping into our public sewer system, please report it immediately to prevent damage to our system.

Call the Cedar City Regional Wastewater Treatment Facility: 435-865-4552 or 435-867-9430 or call Cedar City Police Department's 24-Hour Non-emergency Dispatch: 435-586-2955.

CONSTRUCTION UNDERWAY AT THE CEDAR CITY REGIONAL AIRPORT

On May 28, we officially started our terminal expansion project at the Cedar City Regional Airport! This $5.2 million project will add an additional gate, quadruple our gate seating, add restrooms, and improve our baggage claim area, all paid for by Federal grants with some support from Airport Operation funds.

A ceremonial groundbreaking was held where we heard wonderful remarks about our airport and its future from Mayor Garth Green, Council member R. Scott Phillips, Kirk Neilson with engineering company Woolpert, and our Airport Manager Tyler Galetka. Thank you to all who attended and helped put this together!

Passenger experience will have minimal impact during the 10-month duration of the project, we will provide guidance and updates throughout the project.

AN EXCITING NEW RAIL FACILITY IS COMING TO IRON COUNTY

This month will see the grand opening of the largest railport in Iron County, just outside of Cedar City, with guests from the Union Pacific Railroad, the Utah Inland Port Authority (UIPA), and local and state governments.

Cedar City, UT Transload – built, owned, and operated by Savage – is made up of 74 acres of rail-served property, and will transform the region into a critical hub for the transportation and storage of dry, liquid, and dimensional products.

This will bring new business to the county, benefiting the local economy.

We’re excited to welcome Savage, UIPA, and all future customers of the facility to Iron County and look forward to many years of prosperity ahead!
