June 2024

Summer Games

Before the Olympics begin in Paris, SAS offers its own summer games! New sessions of mah jongg, canasta, and bridge are scheduled to keep you playing all season long.

June includes our special event with Debra Green Feldman, author of Mahjong at Mara's (2024). Students have two choices for registration.

Foursomes may enjoy Triple Play: A Novel, Nibbles, and Games (12527) for a midday author visit with Debra Green Feldman, a light lunch, and then two-hours of open play of either mah jongg or canasta on Friday, June 14, 2024, from 11am to 2:30pm. Bring your own tiles or cards. Fee is inclusive a table for four players, a book for each player and a light lunch.

For a more abbreviated experience from 11am to 12:30pm, individuals may sign up for Author Visit: Debra Green Feldman, Mahjong at Mara's (2024) (12528) to hear the novelist speak about an endearing and diverse cast of characters set in suburban New Jersey. Protagonist Lila and her teenage son Dante find solace amidst a local group of mahjong-playing octogenarians. As new neighbors and Dante's friends enter the mix, all their lives take surprising turns that raise questions about concepts of family, loyalty, and love. Class fee includes a copy of the book and a light lunch.

Please register now so we may have an accurate head count for lunch planning purposes.

On Monday, June 3, 2024, Anne Wiesel starts the next six-session series of both Let's Play Mah Jongg: Beginner Series (12471) and Let's Play Mah Jongg: Supervised Play (12473). Once those courses end, she will lead a five-session set (Let's Play Mah Jongg: Beginner Series (12472) and Let's Play Mah Jongg: Supervised Play (12474)) beginning Monday, July 15, 2024.

On Wednesday, July 17, 2024, Katie Goldberg will offer six sessions of Let's Play Mah Jongg: Supervised Play (12616) to conclude the summer term.

Jamie Meadow will be dealing cards all summer long. Her next class is a one-session tutorial for players ready to move beyond the basics. Canasta Strategies: Aces, Sevens, and Special Hands (12643) will meet Friday, June 14, 2023. The following month, beginning Thursday, July 18, 2024, she will lead a six-session series of both Beginner Canasta (12562) and Canasta: Supervised Play (12564).

Card games continue as Rich Laufer leads Bridge: Supervised Play (12526) for seven weeks, beginning Monday, July 8, 2024.

Khalid Al Doori will offer a six-session Beginner Bridge (12458) course and a six-session Bridge: Supervised Play (12459) course starting Tuesday, July 9, 2024.
