Note from...

Doug Sawyer, MD, PhD, Chief Academic Officer

Hi all,

With summer upon us, I found myself in the garden this weekend, appreciating a convergence of old and new biology unlocking potential in a way that reminded me of why I love my job.  Last summer, in an effort to live up to my registering our backyard in the Million Pollinators Garden Challenge, I picked up some native plants with track records of serving the needs of butterflies and other pollinators. I had forgotten about these, but over the last weekend in June (recognized as National Pollinator's Month) I noticed one growing rapidly in a flower bed by the driveway. I found the tag in the ground that I had saved last summer when I put it in: Eutrochium purpureum, a.k.a. Joe-Pye Weed. I was thrilled to see this perennial coming back and getting ready to put out some purple flowers soon. Named for Joe Pye who was an indigenous healer in colonial times, apparently the root is good for kidney stones and typhoid fever. It got me wondering if we know what Joe Pye saw in this plant root, and if we have learned anything since then that is of use to non-traditional medicine. Seems like there is room here for more research.

Meanwhile, around the corner in my vegetable bed, grows a plant that I had also gotten curious about: the 'purple tomato'. The product of a plant molecular biologist, the tomatoes from this plant will harness snapdragon-derived transcription factors to increase expression of anthocyanin antioxidants.  I am awaiting the first blossoms, and definitely looking forward to seeing how these bioengineered tomato's taste!

I could go on about how working with these plants reminds me of why I love my job, but I am concerned that this might be a bit boring. So rather than that, I invite you to send me a note reflecting on what is going on in your life, whether in your garden or somewhere else, that reminds you of why you love yours!

With gratitude for all you do,

Doug

Celebrating Clinical Trials Day

Clinical Trials Day was May 20th. This day marks what is often considered the start of the first randomized clinical trial. In 1747, James Lind started his clinical trial to study the different remedies for scurvy among the sailors at sea. His research provided evidence that consuming citrus fruit was effective in treating that disease.

On May 20th, the clinical trials team hosted an informational table at Maine Medical Center. The team highlighted the significant research being conducted at MaineHealth to raise awareness. Patients, family members, and care team members stopped by to learn about the valuable research happening at MaineHealth.

Huge shout out to those who participated in hosting the informational table: Harmony Renna, Becca Edwards, Ideh Rohani, Krista Garrison, Tammy Myers, Jamie Saunders, Tammy Infantine, Gabe Garcia, and Cyndi Marcotte. Pictured in photo: Ideh Rohani, Research RN, and Krista Garrison, Manager, Clinical Trials.
