Patricia Liehr, Ph.D., Named Interim Dean; Dean Safiya George to Assume New Role as President of UVI

Christine E. Lynn College of Nursing Emerita Professor Patricia Liehr, Ph.D., has agreed to serve as interim dean as the search for permanent leadership in the college continues, and as Dean Safiya George begins her new role as president of the University of the Virgin Islands (UVI). In 2004, Dr. Liehr joined the College of Nursing as a professor and the first associate dean for nursing research and scholarship. She served in the associate dean role for a total of 12 years (2004-2014; 2018-2020), and was awarded emerita professor status upon retiring in 2020.


Dean George has served as the inaugural recipient of the Holli Rockwell Trubinsky Eminent Dean in Nursing — one of the largest endowed nursing deanships in the country — as well as a Helen K. Persson Eminent Scholar and professor in the College of Nursing. Over the last five years, she has been committed to creating a new field of data science within nursing education, research and practice and establishing a state-of-the-art Center for Advanced Nursing Simulation, Clinical Learning and AI that opened on the Davie campus in December 2023, and upgrading the Boca Raton campus simulation center.


In addition, Dean George has been a champion of increasing students' access to resources to ensure their academic success, including the formation of a dedicated student success team. She is only the third dean to be appointed in the college’s 45-year history.

Anne Boykin Institute Summer Academy 2024

Join the annual Anne Boykin Institute's Summer Academy on "Earth Caring: Tending Our Common Home." The academy will be held at Florida Atlantic University's Christine E. Lynn College of Nursing on June 20 and 21, both in-person on the Boca Raton campus and online. Among the academy's objectives are to develop an increased understanding of the moral imperative for caring for the earth; examine the relationships among health, justice and the environment for nursing practices grounded in caring; and create actionable ideas to promote how to care for our planet.

2024 International Association for Human Caring Conference 

Register now for the 45th annual International Association for Human Caring conference on June 22 and 23, at the Christine E. Lynn College of Nursing, Boca Raton campus. NCF President Sydney Gibbons

This fall, Sydney Gibbons will return as the president of the college’s Nurses Christian Fellowship (NCF) organization. Preceptor Spotlight: Xochil Echeona

Xochil Echeona, DNP '20, has impressive credentials as a Board-Certified Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP-BC) and Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP-BC) that reflect her comprehensive expertise in the nursing field.


As a preceptor, Xochil has consistently demonstrated her commitment to nurturing the next generation of nurses, sharing her knowledge with students specializing in both Family Nurse Practitioner and Doctor of Nursing Practice programs. Her work at Trujillo Medical Center is a testament to her dedication, where she not only practices, but also enriches the educational journey of aspiring nurses.

In her role as a preceptor, Xochil has been instrumental in shaping the clinical skills and professional attitudes of numerous FAU Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) students.


Xochil's dedication to this role is evident in her personalized guidance, ensuring that each student receives the attention and tailored instruction necessary to excel in their future nursing careers. Her ability to bridge theory with practice has made her an invaluable resource to both students and the Trujillo Medical Center alike, enhancing the educational standards and quality of care provided.

The College of Nursing has received reaccreditation from the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) for its BSN, MSN, DNP and post-graduate certificate programs. They have all been accredited for another 10 years. The accreditation is effective from November 1, 2023 to June 30, 2034.

Drs. Lisa Wiese, Beth King and nursing students provided health screenings for participants at the City of South Bay Community Health and Wellness Fair on Saturday, May 11.

Faculty retreat 2023

Members of the College of Nursing leadership team, faculty and staff will participate in a Leadership Retreat facilitated by the Center for Creative Leadership from June 17 to 18, in Greensboro, NC.

On June 26, College of Nursing staff are set to join their annual summer retreat. This year, staff will enjoy an appreciation language workshop and a paint and sip session, along with a delicious luncheon.

Research News

College of Nursing faculty Drs. Lisa Wiese and Christine Williams' NIH-funded research in the Glades served as the inspiration for this powerful NBC6 documentary about sugarcane burning in Florida. The comprehensive video features many interviews with local residents, experts and researchers, including Drs. Wiese and Williams. Thanks to their efforts, citizens' complaints about the poor air quality in the Glades are now being heard. Watch Video

Ortega

On May 1, Dr. Maria Ortega was named the interim executive director of the FAU/NCHA Community Health Center. Dr. Ortega also serves as the associate dean of clinical practice in the College of Nursing and director of the Louis and Anne Green Memory and Wellness Center.

Dr. Michelle Broadbent has been appointed Assistant Dean of Undergraduate Programs within the college. She had been serving in that role on an interim basis since spring 2023.

Mindy Borchardt joined the Louis and Anne Green Memory and Wellness Center as the director of finance for Clinical Programs and Services on Monday, May 13. 

Dr. Subhosit Ray is a new postdoctoral fellow in the College of Nursing, and he is being supervised by Dr. David Newman. He hopes to bring his expertise in developing deep learning architectures and reinforcement learning algorithms to make insightful contributions to health care. Before joining as a postdoc, he collaborated with the college's research team as a graduate research assistant for the COVID-19 predictive analysis project.

Drs. Joy Longo, Candy Wilson and Maria Ortega have been selected to participate in the American Association of Colleges of Nursing's Wharton Executive Leadership Program, Aug. 6-8, in Philadelphia. The three-day program will address important executive leadership topics and provide numerous assessment experiences.

Miriam Ismail

Miriam Ismail received her Ph.D. from the University of Natural Health in May. Her dissertation title was, "While the modern lifestyle has its advantages, it has negatively impacted our youth on the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual levels."

Dr. Armiel Suriaga received his Master of Public Health in Epidemiology degree from Harvard University on May 23. Dr. Suriaga also delivered a symposium presentation at the Harvard University Chan School of Public Health on May 21, titled "The Associations of Mitragynine (kratom), Opioids and Other Substances with Drug Intoxication."

Dr. Rita de Cassia Gengo e Silva Butcher was a speaker for a conference held in Brazil and virtually, on May 8, organized by the Rio de Janeiro Board of Nursing. She spoke about "Gordon's Functional Health Patterns as a framework to guide the documentation of the nursing process." To hear a recording of the presentation in Portuguese, click here.

Joy Longo

The Nursing Consortium of Florida recently elected Dr. Joy Longo to its Board of Directors. She will officially be installed as a member on July 9. As a board member, Dr. Longo will serve a two-year term.

Recruitment and Outreach Specialist Juliet Soler shared information about the College of Nursing's outstanding academic programs, research and practice at the Nurse Practitioner Associates for Continuing Education (NPACE) conference in Clearwater Beach, FL, on May 14-16, and the Wellington Regional Hospital Higher Education Fair on May 10.

Dr. Clarene Brown-King was awarded $750 from the Edna Hicks Research Fund award, via the Florida Nurses Foundation and Florida Nurses Association, for her study "Exploring the Experiences of Family Members Caring for a Relative with Alcohol-Use Disorder.”

Dean Safiya George contributed to a May 10 Modern Healthcare article about how concerned nurses are with using artificial intelligence for patient care, following the results of a recent nationwide survey from FAU College of Nursing and Cross Country Healthcare.
