Years ago I did a lecture at the ACVA and ISAR conferences entitled Venus: Conjunction or Combustion? I wanted to talk about the difference in how different cultures regard the activity of Venus as it moves closer to the Sun in its inferior, or interior, conjunction (when Venus is retrograde, closest to the earth in its cycle, and in between the Sun and Earth on the near side of the Sun) or its superior, or external, conjunction (when Venus is direct, farthest from the earth in its cycle, and the Sun in between the earth and Venus, which lies on the far side of the Sun) as it is now.
Modern psychological astrology always looked at the conjunction as creating something beautiful, loving, and prosperous, and will often take an orb of up to 8 degrees, to describe the conjunction in the birth chart or in the sky where it is obscured by the Sun and is nowhere to be seen. Of course, there is really no set rule as to the length of the orb, but since this conjunction is exact on June 4th it will be within an orb of up to 8 degrees beginning around May 10, when Venus is a morning star, meaning it rises and sets before the Sun, through June 30, when Venus rises as an evening star, meaning it rises and sets after the Sun. After the conjunction on June 4th, however, Venus is on the far side of the Sun, and as a result will still not be seen until about mid to late July in the evening sky, but much more significantly in august, where it will become brighter and brighter over the next few months. It will continue to be seen at night after the Sun has set, since it rises and sets after the Sun, until it eventually conjoins the Sun as an inferior conjunction on March 23, 2025. (I speak more about this in the Six Months Ahead and in all my talks, plus this is part of my revised book on Venus, which I am working on now and was assisted by some of your very generous donations to my Kickstarter campaign.).
Due to the revival of Classical Astrology the term cazimi, which applies to when Venus is in the heart of the Sun, is being substituted for the word conjunction, but there are actually very strict parameters for cazimi, which occurs according to some traditions when the Sun and Venus are 17 minutes apart and less, while other traditions call cazimi when Venus and the Sun are up to a degree apart. This would be interpreted as Venus being at its most powerful, even though it has long disappeared from view. In a birth chart it could be someone who has extraordinary capabilities when it comes to the arts, money, and strong expressions of love and understands the meaning of partnerships.
In the Indian tradition, however, there is no mention of cazimi to my knowledge and since Jyotisa is an observational science, and meanings are derived by viewing the sky, Venus is on the far side of the Sun, farthest from the earth, and combust meaning obliterated by the Sun and nowhere to be seen. In Jyotisa, a direct Venus is considered to be combust when it is within 10 degrees of the Sun, since that is when it cannot be seen in the sky. That would be between about April 29 and July 12. Ancient cultures viewed this planetary combination as a lack of Venus and what it represents (ie. love, prosperity, relationships, productivity, fertility, etc.) will be missing or diminished in the world, and affecting where the conjunction falls in our charts. Just Imagine an ancient priest/astronomer/astrologer looking for the magnificent star, and seeing nothing.
For those who know the Mesopotamian myth of Inanna/Ishtar, you also know that this legend immortalized the journey of Venus in the sky, and when the planet disappeared from view for the equivalent of about two months, the myth portrayed the Goddess in the underworld, and the land above was parched and chaotic until she returned. For me the light and beauty that Venus represents will not be as accessible as usual, and we must try that much harder to access love, prosperity, peace and whatever else Venus represents in general and in your chart.
We should expect that between June 3-5, one day on either side of the exact conjunction on June 4, confidence might be high, but power, ambition, and ego might overpower cooperation, love and diplomacy. But since Venus is combust from about April 28 through July 10, this in ability for love to come through might be an apparent theme.
And still other astrologers refer to the conjunction as the Venus Star Point, also referring to the new cycle of Venus that is represented by the conjunction with the Sun. Whichever way you view it, however, it still means that the combination of a planet like the Sun whose keywords are ego, confidence, power, authority, brightness, vitality, with the qualities of Venus, which means love, relationships, diplomacy, prosperity, power of love are palpable.
Try to see from looking at the table above what may have happened on the other times the Sun and Venus conjoin at this degree. You will note, as I have talked about many ties, that the same type of conjunction appears every eight years, but the same degree occurs every four years alternating between inferior and superior conjunction.
In a personal chart, the affairs of the house the conjunction falls in could require revisioning, patience, and the realization that the indulgence, and enjoyment that Venus normally brings will be curtailed. This is where you need to be patient in terms of love, abundance, prosperity, cooperation and anything else Venus represents. Adjusting to a sober (figuratively and literally) way of doing things is important during especially the two months that Venus cannot be seen. Once it rises as an evening star in mid-late July, there will be a rejoicing about the love, cooperation, peace, and enjoyment that will come back in your life, just like Inanna/Ishtar emerging from the Underworld. Right now is the time to go inward, because Venus is combust, not to be seen, and hard to reach, though you know you will be able to reach it soon. Scroll down to see how the conjunction might affect you depending on the system you use.
