Hunger Does Not Take A Summer Vacation

June is a month for change and transition. For some, it's a time to watch their kids graduate from school or at least finish out the year. For others, it a time to take a well-needed vacation. But for most of the people we serve, June is just another month of trying to eke-by on what little they have. June is a month that reminds us that while summer is here, food insecurity doesn’t take a vacation. And neither do we. Which is why we need your continued support. From financial gifts and food drives to packing bags or offering an extra set of hands as a volunteer, there are many ways you can help us help those who need our help. VOLUNTEERS OF THE MONTH

This group of amazing young talent is from the Bridgeport Vocational Center, a unique learning environment where young adults with special needs can develop and master the critical skills necessary to transition successfully from school to adult independence. This team of students has shown up every Thursday this semester to help in a variety of different ways. When asked why they like to volunteer with us, one student said: “I like helping those in need.” Thank you for helping. And proving our point that it takes all kinds of people to make a difference in our community.

THIS YEAR'S "STAMP OUT HUNGER" FOOD DRIVE WAS A SMASHING SUCCESS!

On May 11th, NHIFP was a recipient of a massive truckload of food collected and donated by the U.S. Postal Service and their annual Stamp Out Hunger food drive. We are grateful for the many ways we are able to stock our shelves and the cupboards of our clients. Thank you to everyone who donated their food, time, and strength to help us sort and move everything to the pantry. There was no way we could have done it without your help.

JUNE SPECIAL THANKS

NHIIFP would like to thank the Toluca Lake Neighborhood Council for their constant support of our mission to help get food (and pet food) into the hands of those who need it.

Our friends at the Wesley School in North Hollywood have once again shown their support to help us help others. Together, the students donated hundreds of boxes of Mac & Cheese.

We are grateful to everyone on our team. Thank you for all that you do.

Message From The Executive Board

There have been several recent reports in the LA Times, and in other news outlets about how slowly production is resuming for television and motion pictures in the Los Angeles area. The strikes by the writers’ and actors’ unions have had long-term repercussions. In addition, many studios are challenged by loss of revenue streams from loss of paid subscriptions and other challenges unique to the entertainment industry.

At the NHIFP we try to pay attention to the economic situation of our community as it impacts on our need to provide goods and services to our neighbors. We have noticed a slight increase in the number of unhoused people coming to the Pantry, and just the number of clients we receive each week has not declined since the first challenging months and weeks of the Covid pandemic.

So, in addition to providing our sacks of food, eggs, produce, and other items to our neighbors, we will be welcoming some assistance from other agencies in the coming month. These include:

  • offering free Covid and Hepatitis A vaccines to our unhoused clients through the LA Department of Public Health.
  • the ability to work with the LA Department of Public Social Services to assist clients to register for the CalFresh Nutrition Program.
  • partnering with the Comprehensive Community Health Centers to have a mobile dental and health clinic make periodic visits to the Pantry.
  • Digitizing our intake and distribution system with computers and tablets we are receiving at no cost to us from the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank.
  • Networking more closely with other service organizations, such as the NoHo Home Alliance to improve the care we offer to our community.

Our primary reason for being will continue to offer food to our neighbors.

We simply seek to partner with other agencies and build on the wonderful support we receive from you.

Thank you for your generous support.
