On Monday, July 15, 2024, at 10am, contemporary fiction writer Etaf Rum will converse with SAS instructor Anna Katsavos via Zoom. Rum's first novel, A Woman Is No Man, was a New York Times bestseller. Her second novel, Evil Eye, was an NPR book of the year and, like her debut fiction, draws from personal experiences as the American daughter of Palestinian immigrants. Her protagonists are conflicted women who struggle with reluctance obedience to cultural traditions while yearning for freedoms and education typically denied to their gender. A few weeks later, Anna Katsavos returns to SAS with another acclaimed novelist. Author Visit: Rachel Khong, Real Americans (2024) (Course 12651) will meet on Monday, August 5, 2024, at 1pm over Zoom. Like Rum's works, Khong's two novels are also family-centric dramas of immigrant families. Khong's debut fiction, Goodbye, Vitamin was an NPR book of the year and winner of the California Book Award for First Fiction. Her recently published second book, Real Americans, was an instant New York Times bestseller that bounces back and forth in time, weaving a suspenseful story about three generations of Chinese Americans in a manner that is part historical fiction and part family saga, with mysteries and secrets to unfold.
