A Warm Welcome for Newborns & Their Families

Help Me Grow Newborn Outreach launched in May!  Liz Cooksey is our outreach nurse who meets families in the hospital at Skagit Valley Hospital’s birth center. She welcomes them with a gift and signs them up to receive developmental and local resource information. If families need additional support, she connects them with our Help Me Grow Resource Navigator or other community organizations. In less than a month, Liz provided outreach visits to 28 families! 11,475 Hours!

That's how much time local high school students volunteered in the community through Varsity in Volunteerism (ViV) during the 2023-24 school year. ViV, a youth program co-developed by United General District 304 and United Way of Skagit County, celebrated its student volunteers on May 15 at the first-ever Central Celebration. More than 130 community members and students came together to honor the impact of youth volunteerism and bestow varsity letters to the 68 students who completed at least 100 hours of service this past school year. Businesses that benefit from these engaged students include The Children’s Museum of Skagit County, Mount Vernon Parks & Rec, The Friendship House, and many more! Check out this video to learn more about ViV!

“Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world: indeed, it’s the only thing that ever has.” Margaret Mead, anthropologist.

Share your Feedback – Youth Cannabis Use Prevention

Most youth in Washington do not use cannabis, aka marijuana, but roughly a third of WA tenth-graders said it would be easy for them to get if they wanted to.

To better understand youth access to cannabis, along with safe and secure storage habits in households, the North Sound Youth Cannabis and Commercial Tobacco Prevention Network has launched an anonymous survey for adults. Individuals (21+ only) who complete the full survey will be eligible to win an Amazon gift card. Click here to take this two-minute survey in English or Spanish.

Explore Skagit Parks & Trails!

Get outside for a walk with us and enjoy the gorgeous summer sun and scenery. This is a donation-based program, and your support helps us provide guided walks for anyone who wants to participate, regardless of their ability to pay. View the schedule and sign up here.
