Worship with Us

Christ Church is open for worship at 8:00 a.m. and 10:00 a.m. on Sundays. The live stream of the 10:00 a.m. service can be found on our You Tube channel! You can watch it in real time or at your convenience. Find it here.

A Note from Our Priest

Dear family and friends of Christ Church,

I have a habit of rotating through our streaming subscriptions. Several are mainstays in our household, but others are more fluid. Apple TV+ is making a reappearance, which means I will have a chance, on some rainy days this summer, to rewatch the series Ted Lasso. For those unfamiliar, the show follows the titular character as he moves from the US to the UK to coach a professional football (soccer) team.

The show appeals to me on multiple levels, including its cast of well-developed, authentic characters, its wicked humor, and its inherent optimism. A fan-favorite moment that I look forward to viewing again sees Ted utter words of Walt Whitman: Be curious, not judgmental. The scene went viral, bringing Whitman’s wisdom to the attention of many new sets of eyes and ears. This is just one of the reasons I look forward to reengaging the series.

Curiosity is, I offer, an orientation that we too often dismiss. Confidence and certainty can often be more appealing settings to invest our emotional capital. And yet, as Whitman and Lasso point out, lack of curiosity can frequently lead us down the road to judgment and blind us to the unexpected and mysterious ways God is working in our lives.

I’ve thought about this as my calendar page turned to June this week. Summer is nearly here, bringing a change of rhythm and pace. As my family and I mark our first year living in Sussex County and enjoy our first full summer here, I want to spend more time looking through the lens of curiosity. Yes, we’ve met many of our neighbors and formed our first impressions. But those initial judgments need not comprise the whole picture. Curiosity gifts me the opportunity to deepen relationships by increasing awareness and empathy.

I pray that this summer season sees me learning and asking more about this incredible part of the world to which God has called me to live and serve, and the beautiful people with whom I now share it.

See you in church! Blessings and peace,

Chris

The Rev. Chris Streeter
