Looking for Host Families

Bonjour!

My name is Megan Midgley and I am the Regional Administrator for International Cultural Exchange Services here in CT! I AM reaching out concerning finding homes for 2 French girls who would like to spend their exchange year in CT! If you have any help or suggestions on finding them host families, I'd really appreciate it! The host families are volunteers but the students come with their own spending money and insurance. They would attend the local high school from August until June when they would return home.

Kind Regards,

Megan Midgley, mmidgley@icesusa.org

Apéro National French Conversation Group (en français) – Every Wednesday

The group is for high-intermediate to advanced (or fluent) speakers who are current members of an Alliance Française chapter in the U.S. (if you are not a current member of an Alliance chapter, visit the Chapter’s page and sign up for membership at one of your closest AF chapters) or AATF members. Native speakers are welcome. This group conversation is for adult participants, ages 17 and up.

Note that conversation groups are not substitutes for taking an official French class. Conversation groups are for informal practice and for sharing the joy of conversing in French with other like-minded Francophiles or Francophones.

The national group meets by Zoom for an hour every Wednesday, and meets to accommodate our after-work Apéro theme:

Every Wednesday @ 5:00 PT / 7:00 pm CT / 8:00 pm ET

The group is hosted by a member of the Federation of Alliances Françaises board – Linda Witt. Attendees will be assigned to breakout rooms of 4-5 people, with each breakout session lasting 14 minutes. The rooms are then are re-created (for a different mix each time). In this way, participants get to meet and chat with a variety of participants from different backgrounds, regions, and fluency levels.

Participants will need to use Zoom (a free videoconferencing service). To get on the invitation list for the “Apéro-National” sessions, click here.

D-Day and the Soul of France | French-American Histories (in English)

June 5 @ 6:00 pm - 7:00 pm EDT

Roger Mummert will revisit D-Day and the Battle of Normandy through an exploration of narratives, both American and French. The GIs who fought and died in this epic invasion and liberation were called to duty in a “Great Crusade” that was fueled by a sense of “American exceptionalism.” Then, in the horrors of battle, they were driven by basic instincts to survive and get home. The people of Normandy faced a more complex set of narratives. After four years of bitter occupation, liberation would come via a hellfire that claimed the lives of loved ones and reduced farms and towns to smoldering ruins. Some followed the narrative of restoring an “eternal France.” They fanned the “flame of resistance” with acts of sabotage against their occupiers. Others chose collaboration, still others the middle ground of attentisme.

This event will be on Zoom and is free for all. Please click here to register.

Interview with Martin Walker: Bruno’s Cookbook (in English)

June 10 @ 2:00 pm - 3:00 pm EDT

Featuring meals from the best-selling series, local recipes, charming anecdotes, and a history of the novels’ French setting, Bruno’s Cookbook invites readers into the bucolic life of Martin Walker and showcases his passion for the Périgord region’s rich cuisine. This event will be on Zoom and is free for all Alliance Française members in the U.S., AATF members, and invited guests of the presenters.
