Message from Dean Egerstedt

I did not enter graduate school with the goal of becoming a professor. In fact, I had a rather confused idea about what it means to be a professor, but it did not take long for me to decide that I wanted to pursue an academic career. Key to this decision was the realization that a faculty career can be multifaceted and ever-evolving. We get to play a part in our students’ educational journeys, which is a real privilege, and spend time in our labs, working with graduate students and postdocs, trying to solve hard problems. But more importantly, we have the creative freedom to pick these problems and let our curiosity guide us. This newsletter is a testament to the creativity in the UCI Samueli School of Engineering – from students building new musical instruments to a trailblazing and large-scale new research program using machine learning to understand liquid vapors.

Magnus Egerstedt, Ph.D.
