The IFMA North America Operations and Maintenance Benchmarking Report is IFMA’s premier resource for facility professionals and their industry partners to generate key insights on facility operational performance. With nearly 40,000 buildings represented over 2.2 billion gross square feet across the United States and Canada, this report provides janitorial, maintenance and utilities benchmarks. The benchmarks are classified by industry sector served by the facility, facility use, single buildings versus portfolio sites, U.S. climate zone, ownership profile, facility age, size and geographic location. The report also contains detailed maintenance staffing profiles for technicians (average number of full-time employees for electricians, plumbers, heating, ventilation and air-conditioning plus five other trades), supervisory/administrative staffing, and total maintenance staff sizes. New to this year’s report is the number of square feet managed per full-time employee by job function.
This report also includes a new section that provides detailed information of the cost impacts from COVID-19 on janitorial, maintenance and utility costs (fiscal year 2020-21); insights on costs of specific social distancing programs (PPE, teleworking, wayfinding, etc.), as well as costs of hygiene/sanitation costs (hand sanitizer, isolation, sink run time, etc.); and several new metrics: COVID-19 cost impacts, number of buildings in the sample size for most metrics, historical comparison of energy management practices (2017 vs. 2021), as well as space management allocations for maintenance technicians and supervisory personnel.
