This book structure has a concertina binding, with 5-hole pamphlet stitch, and a cover which wraps around and neatly tucks in for a truly elegant finish. The book is great for use as travel or art journal, photo album, field journal or sketchbook. The possibilities for design and use are endless. WORKSHOP
Fall Flora & The Artist's Book
with Guest Artist Andie Thrams

Only 4 spaces left!

Friday evening, August 24, 6-8pm
Saturday and Sunday, August 25-26, 10am - 4pm
NBG Studio

Cost $200, includes $45 materials fee

Explore the elusive creative space between the careful and the wild as you create an accordion-folding book. Native flora will be used as inspiration for drawing, painting, and writing in both traditional and non-traditional ways. Directed experiments using watercolor, ink, and gouache will develop imagery and content, full of autumn magic.

Andie Thrams is a Sierra Nevada-based visual artist. A lifelong devotion to creative work in wilderness habitats, especially within the pages of her field journals, has evolved into artist's books and paintings held in private and public collections throughout the United States. Her work is widely exhibited and has been honored by institutions including the Sitka Center for Art & Ecology and Yosemite Renaissance. Andie earned a BA in art practice from the University of California at Berkeley, and she regularly teaches outdoor art workshops.

IMPRINTS UPDATE

Over the past month, IMPRINTS work sessions have been lively gatherings of NBG members working on a variety of tasks in the process of publishing our first letterpress book: trimming pages, collating folios, preparing bookboard covers, endsheets and endcaps.
Many members already receive the NBG NOTES that announce the work sessions, but if you are not receiving them and would like to, please let us know here.  Join us in binding IMPRINTS!

NORTHWOODS BOOK ARTS GUILD LIBRARY

Did you know your Guild membership includes access to our circulating and resource library? If you're looking for inspiration or techniques for everything from structure to embellishment, we have it!

Our library grows through Guild purchases and member donations. It was greatly expanded this year through the generous donation of over 80 books from the library of Marilyn Askelin, fellow book artist and member of the board from 2014 to 2018. We are honored to have Marilyn's collection, which is wide ranging and covers all aspects of book arts.

The library is run on the honor system with self sign-out and return forms, and a loan period of two-weeks with renewals.

Our library also includes a collection of models and artist books that do not circulate but are exhibited to offer an introduction to the work of local book artists as well as those who live outside Alaska.
