As we end another successful year, let's celebrate all that we have accomplished and raise the bar a little higher for the new year! Our Philanthropic Programs have exceeded the past years' services and added new projects. This is because we believe that our programs really do have an impact! We also couldn't have been successful if it weren't for the abundance of donations and our dedicated "busy bees" at our thriving Thrift Shop.
Our programs are not active during the summer, but the Thrift Shop is still in operation. We could really use any time you can give to join our friendly, fun group upstairs and/or downstairs. Operation School Bell's Chair, Laurelyn Berger, will start off the new school year with their first In-Store event in August and the next Regular Meeting will be on the second Wednesday, September 12, 2018.
I look forward to "raising the bar" and having another successful year. I am confident it can be accomplished with all of your passion and dedication. By choosing to work for six figures (S M I L E S) you have proven that your time and talents are priceless.

Assistance League of Hawaii welcomed another new member this month who was referred by our free spirited, always cheerful "tutu" member,
Joan Helbling.
Elvina Yamashiro ("Vina")
is anxious to get back into circulation now that her granddaughters (triplets) are in school. She is retired but was managing the Makiki Recreational Center and enjoyed sewing baby things for Kapiolani Hospital. As we end another successful year with record breaking Program and Operations numbers, I also am overwhelmed by the number of new members we brought on board. Membership is an ongoing process and is everyone's job. You have all done a terrific job at getting the word out to your friends and customers in the shop. We were inundated with referrals and as a result, we have recruited 16 new members for a total of 103 members to end the year.
I will be passing the baton on to
Geri Johnson who will do a "bang up" job with
Karen MClelland! They make a great team, but will also need your continued support to keep our numbers growing.

As vice-president, Gerri Migita, blazed quite a trail of inviting new members into our community. I hope to follow in her big footsteps not only with welcoming new members but also with appreciating and supporting all members.
Quite frankly I came into this position simply because no one else wanted it. This not surprising nor
is it a criticism
. Many of you have and continue to work long and hard with Assistance League of Hawaii. Many of us are new and do not feel we have the depth of background or expertise for taking a leadership role. My decision to accept this position was bolstered by those who agreed to help. Karen McClelland immediately came forward willing to conduct the orientations for new members. Members of the present board likewise offered their wisdom and experience.
This brings me to why we are a community - supporting the children in our Hawaii-wide community while we also assist each other to accomplish this mission. So as I learn my duties and more about the ALH organization, I also pledge my support to each of you. Let's all grow together.

Liz Benton presented the membership amendments to the By-Laws at the May 9 meeting. A vote on the By-Laws will be taken at the next regular meeting which will be on September 12, 2018.
Changes/Amendments to the Bylaws are:
#1. Eliminate Communications Chairman 8.03(d) as no longer relevant since emails are the mode of communication to membership.
#2. Eliminate Orientation Chairman 8.03(i) as work is done by the Membership Chair.
#3. Eliminate Tutu Tutorial Committee 8.03(n) This community service will be moved to Operation School Bell. Few members are participating to warrant a full Committee.
Note: There will be an appointment of a Chapter Hub Administrator as required by National, but requires no vote from members. 8.03(d)

Operation Wildlife ladies will start their new year on Monday June 4 at 1:00 pm in the Ohana Room.
We will be setting up for the coming year and volunteering for duties over the summer. We will have some training for new members and a chance to see the new program later this summer. Anyone interested is invited to come by.
We saw a total of 4472 children from both Neighbor Island and Oahu Schools combined.
Thank you to all that participated in Operation Wildlife this year. It was a wonderful experience for all! Have a great summer!

Our tutors had a great year!
Survey results from Puuhale Library students were recently reported:

Due to travel plans, absent snowbirds, sickness, hip-replacements etc. staffing workers for the Thrift Shop can be challenging, especially during the summer time. This is very evident for June. We are open 4 days a week. Some days, like Thursdays, it helps to have 4 people working. The Thrift Shop funds most of our programs but it needs the workers to remain open. Please review your schedules to see if you can give an extra day or half-day to help. We will offer training for anyone who has not worked downstairs but would like to learn.
Upstairs we have 50 'banker boxes' of good donations in the Ohana Room from the Urquharts. Unfortunately, because we are receiving so many wonderful bins of donations from "Bruce" - we have not been able to even start on sorting these boxes . We need to tackle current donations so as to keep our donation bins empty. And we need different items daily on the floor for our many customers, some of whom visit us two times a day.
Thanks to the many members who put in several hours each month working. But as you can sense from this appeal, we need more help immediately to function smoothly for the summer. Any time you can offer will be appreciated.

Correspondence for the Month of May:
A thank you letter was sent to Cathy Kissel for her monetary donation in memory of Barbara Bachmann. Thank you letters were also sent to Ronnie Wassill, Nancy Sparacino, Margie Van Swearingen for their monetary donations in memory Pat Sanbornʻs husband Alan. Pat Sanborn was sent an acknowledgement letter to let her know that donations were made to Assistance League of Hawaii in memory of her husband, Alan.
A "Sympathy Card " was sent to Kathy Takamoto for the loss of her mother.
Just wanted to let you know that Ellen Dihel had an accident. She fell during the Charity Walk on Saturday, May 19. She ended up in the hospital and needed to have a hip replacement done right away. She has been at Queens since then, but she will be moved to The Villas, 2230 Liliha St., Honolulu, Hi 96817 for OT and PT. I'm not sure how long she will be there. You can contact her on her cell phone 808-223-6907. She is in good spirits, but looking forward to going home.

The order for 300 Malama Bears arrived in May and were added to the 50 we had remaining from the previous order.
Carol Jones delivered 80 bears to Kapiolani Medical Center. Pat Dixon and Jane Winslow delivered 40 to Legacy of Life, 80 to Shriners Hospital, and 40 to Hospice Hawaii Pediatrics.
Six Assistance League members participated in the 5.2 Mile Visitor Industry Charity Walk wearing the Assistance League T-Shirts on May 19th. They were Kathy Takemoto, Helen Taufa'asau, Andrea Cyriacks, Jane Winslow, Ellen Dihel, and Trish Kiladis.

To date the Share Program has donated $16,816 worth of goods to the community serving 11,878 individuals. I want to take this opportunity to thank all the people who work so diligently upstairs for their assistance in sorting items for the program and Marty Kehoe for his delivery duties.
