Legacy: Community Must Invest in Youth (1998)

“We are willing to lock our kids up. We are not looking at early intervention and prevention. We are not making an effort to integrate those leaving the criminal justice system into the wider community. If the people developing policy are mostly white, the last thing they are going to think about is how those policies will impact African Americans. It is time for us to be at the table.”

Action Steps From Our Community Partners

From NAMI

Mental health programs continue to close due to the low reimbursement rates. This week Northeast Youth and Family Services decided to close the NETS Day Treatment program effective June 6th.

"The Day Treatment level of care is unable to be fiscally sustainable with the insurance reimbursement rates we receive from third party payers. This level of care is sadly collapsing across the state because revenue is unable to sustain operations."

We will see more closures if the Minnesota Legislature does not step up and allocate more funding to the Health and Human Services Finance Committee so that they can raise rates for the services that have the greatest gap between true costs and reimbursement levels.

Rainbow Health

Donating to our Mental Health Access Fund helps ensure we have the resources to offer counseling and therapy regardless of people’s ability to pay. A $100 donation helps pay for one therapy session.

In recognition of Mental Health Month, we’ve set a goal to raise $10,000 in the month of May to help cover the therapy costs for 100 people who can’t afford it. Founded on the front lines of the AIDS epidemic 40 years ago, we know a health crisis when we see it and we know it takes a community to respond.

Rainbow Health combines therapy with other essential services like legal advocacy, health insurance navigation, sexual healthcare, financial assistance, substance use support, and more.

University of Minnesota Extension

The University of Minnesota Extension, with support from Minnesota’s Departments of Agriculture and Health, is offering free trainings to support mental health awareness during the month of May. In-person and online options are available, but registration is required.

COMET™ (Changing Our Mental and Emotional Trajectory) is a two-hour program that teaches simple tools to help someone who is struggling shift their mental health trajectory back to a place of wellness and away from the path toward mental health crisis.

COMET™ helps people take that next step after noticing someone might be struggling.
