ORCAS SENIOR CENTER CAPITAL CAMPAIGN FOR BUILDING OWNERSHIP

Orcas Senor Center’s (OSC’s) capital campaign is well on its way to raising the $1.5 million needed to achieve full ownership of the building. As the thermometer at Brown Bear reflects, we have raised about $613,000 thus far. We need your financial support to reach this important goal. Every little (and big) bit helps!

OSC has greatly increased services and activities in the past year. The nonprofit needs full use of the OSC building to adequately meet the needs of our growing senior community and to become a community center for people of all ages and abilities on Orcas. We anticipate that transition over the next 2-5 years and are working with local government to avoid any reduced access to county services on the island.

With less than three full-time employees, OSC provides more than 2,000 service contacts per month to older adults and people living with disabilities, thanks to approximately 100 volunteers. The nonprofit is not a government agency and receives no tax dollar support.

You can ensure that the Center remains a community resource for years to come. OSC has an agreement with San Juan County to buy its 49% interest in the facility. A successful capital campaign will fund complete ownership of the building, critical deferred maintenance, repairs, and possibly future improvements as community needs require.

You can help! Please contribute online at http://tinyurl.com/OSCBuildingFund. For more information or to discuss your tax-deductible donation, please contact us at admin@orcasseniors.org or 360-919-9312. To read more about the capital campaign go to www.orcasseniors.org.

There will be plenty of time for exploring and journaling on your own, watching as she provides journaling demonstrations, and sharing and discussing our work at the end.

ODD FELLOWS KITCHEN INPUT SURVEY

The Hall’s kitchen has been an asset and in use for many years by food service providers and for catering of events held in the Hall. Recently deep cleaned and painted, it is certified as a commercial kitchen. Moving forward, we are seeking input from community members who are interested in utilizing the kitchen and Hall, on what additional improvements would help meet various needs and uses so we can determine how to plan and fund possible expansions of use.

June is our month for inviting community, and potential Kitchen and Hall users, to share their ideas. We are interested in gathering your input, through an online survey and at a Conversation Café at the Odd Fellows Hall on Tuesday, June 18 from 6-8pm.

The online survey link (also online at www.oddshall.org) closes on June 25. We will share initial survey feedback, and generate recommendations and guidance for potential upgrades and opportunities, on June 18. You can join us in person, or by Zoom. Register for Zoom Link

You can help stop Medicare fraud!

Medicare fraud costs an estimated $60 billion each year and ultimately raises the cost of healthcare for everyone. June 3-9 is National Medicare Fraud Prevention Week to call attention to the issue.

As a Medicare beneficiary, you can protect yourself by following these fraud prevention tips:

  • Never give out your personal information such as your Social Security, Medicare, bank account or credit card numbers over the phone, in a text or email, or in person unless you've initiated the contact. Medicare will never contact you for your Medicare number or other personal information.
  • Read your Medicare Summary Notice to be sure you received all the services, supplies, or equipment listed.
  • Make sure you buy medical insurance from a licensed agent. To see if they’re licensed in Washington state go to www.insurance.wa.gov.

Sponsored by Orcas Senior Center, Statewide Health Insurance Benefits Advisors (SHIBA) program volunteers work to empower and assist Medicare beneficiaries, their families, and caregivers to prevent, detect, and report health care fraud, errors, and abuse through outreach, counseling, and education. If you have questions or suspect fraud or abuse, call your Orcas Island SHIBA volunteers at 360-376-5892 or visit www.insurance.wa.gov/medicare.
