Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer (LGBTQ) Pride Month is currently celebrated each year in the month of June to honor the 1969 Stonewall Uprising in Manhattan. The Stonewall Uprising was a tipping point for the Gay Liberation Movement in the United States.

In the United States the last Sunday in June was initially celebrated as "Gay Pride Day," but the actual day was flexible. In major cities across the nation the "day" soon grew to encompass a month-long series of events. Read More

IF YOU HAVEN’T, DO IT NOW!

Recent changes to the laws in Texas have made voting by mail more confusing for our voters. So, do not wait. You will not get a request for a ballot automatically in the mail anymore, even if you got one last year. You must request a ballot every year and now is a good time to request your mail-in ballot for the November Presidential election. It is still early but getting your request into our Montgomery County Elections administrator now cannot hurt!

Here is the official information from the Texas Secretary of State to make sure you are eligible to vote by mail and you can also find the information online at https://www.sos.state.tx.us/elections/voter/reqabbm.shtml

To be eligible to vote early by mail in Texas, you must:

  • be 65 years or older;
  • be sick or disabled;
  • be out of the county on election day and during the period for early voting by personal appearance; or
  • be expected to give birth within three weeks before or after Election Day; or
  • be confined in jail, but otherwise eligible.

To request an application for a Ballot by Mail, you may:

Go to our Montgomery County Election website at www.montgomeryvotes.org   or do it the old-fashioned way and call them directly at (936) 539-7843.

The Impact of Houston's Urban Growth in Flooding Incidents

Houston, Texas, known for its rapid urban sprawl, has faced significant challenges related to flooding. As the city expanded both upward and outward, flood risk patterns changed, leading to more serious and dangerous flooding events.

In this article, we’ll explore how Houston’s growth and development have contributed to the increased incidence of flooding.

Urban Sprawl and Flood Risk: Researchers have found a direct correlation between Houston’s urban sprawl and flood risk. As the city’s center expanded, impervious surfaces such as sidewalks, streets, and buildings increased. Unfortunately, these surfaces prevent heavy rainfall from being absorbed into the ground.

Hurricane Harvey and Its Consequences: In 2017, Hurricane Harvey devastated the Texas coast, dropping over 50 inches of rain across Houston. The consequences of limitless development became evident as thousands of homes flooded, and more than 60,000 rescues took place.

Recent Flooding Incidents: In May 2024, heavy rainfall pummeled the Houston area, leading to hundreds of rescues. While no deaths or major injuries were reported in Harris County (where Houston is located), the impact was significant. Areas near Lake Livingston received up to 23 inches of rain, and northeastern Harris County experienced between 6 to almost 17 inches of rain.

Conclusion: Houston’s growth, coupled with the expansion of impervious surfaces, has intensified flood risks. As the city continues to develop, addressing these challenges becomes crucial.

Remember that Houston’s vulnerability to flooding is an ongoing issue, and proactive measures are necessary to mitigate its impact on communities.

Jennifer Majors Baca Presents:

It's Time to Get Real

about Insurance Rates

Final Friday, June 28, 2024

After a month of local flooding, extreme heat, tornadoes, power outages, and falling trees, this month’s speaker will connect the dots between those disasters and our rapidly rising homeowners’ insurance rates.

Jennifer Majors Baca, our speaker and our own MCDP insurance broker, is a longtime resident of The Woodlands and is CEO of JMB Insurance Solutions. She is also a recent recipient of the distinguished “Volunteer of the Year” and “Diplomat of the Year” awards by The Woodlands Area Chamber of Commerce. But we all know her as a super volunteer and powerhouse of good deeds. She is an activist, advocate, and an ally and she will always speak her mind and tell it like it is!

So don’t hesitate! Submit questions ahead of time to her at JEN@JMB4U.COM so everyone can benefit from your curiosity. Be prepared for a lively and informative discussion with Jennifer on June 28th, the Final Friday in June.

The Final Friday Speaker Program is held the last Friday of the month at Montgomery County Democratic Headquarters, 704 N. Thompson St, Suite 195, Conroe, Texas, 77301.

You may also watch it on Zoom or on Facebook Live.

PLEASE JOIN US FOR THE 4th OF JULY PARADE

This year the 4th of July Parade that is held each year in South County is celebrating its fiftieth year! The Montgomery County Democratic Party has been participating in the South County Parade for many years and we would like to invite all our Democrats, young and old alike, to join us again this year!  The theme of the parade is “Saluting the Past and Celebrating the Future.”

Nothing would be greater than having our float and a caravan of decorated vehicles full of happy families to “salute” our oldest Democrats and “celebrate” our youngest Democrats in keeping with the theme.

If you would like to help decorate the float, ride in the parade with your kids, or participate in any other way in this great “GET OUT THE VOTE Opportunity” let us know at office@mcdptx.org. And watch this space for more parade details.
