It is hard to believe we have already passed the Summer Solstice. Summer seems to fly by at warp speed!
Last month I shared an idea for pre-screening new applicants before beginning their new volunteer orientation. Several of you wrote that you liked that idea and would implement it.
Ken from Soulistic Hospice in AZ was one of our clients that emailed me. His thoughts were so well expressed, that I asked him if I could share his email with all of you.
From Ken:
"I really liked your Pre-Screening idea for new applicants. Before I took this position I thought I was a pretty good judge of character, and a fairly good prognosticator of whether a person would carry-through and be responsible. After almost a year, I humbly bough to your wisdom... Volunteers are tricky folks. You are my Hospice Tutor.
It's like these Volunteers come with myriad expectations, entitlements, good intentions, and a spirit of fierce independence. Yet, we expect them to behave like employees... Yikes. It sets up a dissonance. And the Pre-Screening idea might help me to better serve our organization, save some money, and relieve some of my frustration. So, Thank You. I'm excited to dream up some good assignments..."
Thank YOU Ken for beautifully expressing what most Volunteer Coordinators feel.

Working with volunteers in hospice is very unique and quite different than in other organizations.
I hope our resources provide good support and good vibes to all of you in the trenches - trying to train, track and motivate volunteers to behave like employees!
By the way, I am working on a new version of our Training for administrative/non-patient volunteers. Please read the blurb below and let me know your thoughts on what you'd like to see included.
Have a wonderful Independence Day with family and friends,
Until next time,
Pat
