July is Here!
Stars and stripes forever! We are celebrating our country, our home, and the place where we make our zesty dreams come true! Limoneira is proud to be part of this country and to be growing citrus that is as American as well, lemonade! We have so many things to celebrate as we raise a flag, and toast, to JULY 4th and summer itself!
Limoneira's Latest
Packing houses are the busy operation centers where our citrus is prepared for special delivery to your favorite retailers! The Limoneira packing houses are buzzing with activity, filled with the latest and most innovative technologies that take lemons and then grade, sort, and pack them very carefully – without any bruising. Each lemon is considered special, and thus so is each carefully packed box. In fact, Limoneira can pack up to 2,200 cartons per hour, and this is without anyone touching the fruit! Of course, it’s supervised by a passionate, expertly trained staff, but these lemons are handled with ‘white glove’ service.

You can learn more about how this fast-paced, yet tenderly cared-for process works in this behind-the-scenes video. Special thanks to our friends who made this at Living Local!

Sustainability Update
Summertime is on full throttle with its record hot temperatures, and so now especially we find that water is a precious commodity. We are pleased to share that we have innovated a water purification system here that cleans and recycles water through a patented, sustainable, and environmentally sound process. We have created gravity-fed ponds that circulate and clean 30,000,000 gallons of water annually! It only makes a very small carbon footprint and uses natural resources – vegetation, fine gravel, rocks, and simply the sun’s daily UV rays to clean and filter the bacteria out of the water. Water becomes pure and clean – perfect for our landscape irrigation. We love innovating new technologies, creating new patents, and putting our forward-thinking concepts into practice. We hope to use this for our orchards one day, as we are always making our orchards even more environmentally sound as more exciting technologies become available.

In the Produce News
Foodservice is finally rebounding and in a huge way. Even with limited capacity, the restaurant and bar sales during May totaled a record $67 billion, up from $66 billion in February ‘20, according to the chief agricultural economist Michael Swanson from Wells Fargo.

Results are still a bit slower than they could be due to their lack of staff, however, Swanson said the consumer demand for dining out will persist at high levels for months. It appears that consumers are ready to reclaim their social lives and restaurants and even travel are a big part of what they’ve missed!

Even with the surge towards dining out, supermarket sales have stayed very strong. This bodes well for more sales and more growth for fruits and vegetables, and for Limoneira’s One World of Citrus!

What in the World?
So, your pets may run for cover; but for the rest of us, fireworks can dazzle and delight to no end on July 4th. So, as you settle in to see fireworks wherever you might live, we thought it would be rather interesting to take a look at the world’s largest fireworks display! Held every year in Montreal, Canada, this month-long fireworks competition is the largest pyrotechnics competition of its kind in the world. This typically runs through June – July and has been going strong since 1985. And where is the biggest in the USA? It’s the annual Macy's 4th of July Fireworks celebration in New York City – the country's largest pyrotechnic show, with fireworks shot from multiple barges. Just another reason to love our country, and our holiday. Let freedom ring!

Olympian Lemon Love
"Going for the gold” Olympian Spanish athletes Saul Craviotto and Sandra Sanchez have been vocal about how lemons are their daily go-to’s for health, energy, and vitality. They’re ‘waving the flag’ for lemons and sharing how important they are for everyone, and easy to incorporate, into your daily routines.

Sanchez explained: “My coach always tells me to season meat or fish with lemon. It is important for everyone, but especially for women because lemon is a source of vitamin C that improves iron absorption”.
Ailimpo agrees and reminds us how lemons are a natural product, without fat, without salt or sodium, and with low sugar content, making them an ideal food to include in the Mediterranean Diet, one of the healthiest in the world according to the World Health Organization (WHO). We are all about good health and an energetic life, so we love their endorsement of consuming lemons daily. You could say that’s worth its weight in GOLD!

Last but not Least!
We are excited to announce that Michael Burn has just become our new Global Sourcing Manager! With an economics background from the University of Puerto Rico and a master's degree in business from Inter-American University of Puerto Rico with an emphasis in finance, he wasn’t so sure that he’d actually pursue a career in agriculture, even though it was always his passion. He later realized he shined and excelled in agriculture – solving problems creatively with win / win solutions. He loves people, loves to serve, and now he is here to serve Limoneira by helping us reach new goals, create new value through innovative ways, and help our organization through inspiring valuable teamwork. He says he’s “excited to keep learning and working with everyone in Limoneira” and we’re excited to have him in this important role. We can’t wait to see what you have in store for us, Michael! Congratulations!

Don't forget, The ZEST IS YET TO COME!
See you again next month!
