The City of Greater Sudbury - News and Updates, July 2024

A Message From the Mayor

July Update

July is here and so too is Canada Day, a celebration that brings me immense pride and brings our entire community together. This day is a wonderful reminder of the values that make Canada so special: our rich diversity, commitment to inclusion, and the breathtaking natural environment that we are fortunate to call home.

Canada Day is not just a celebration of our nation's history, but also a tribute to the vibrant mosaic of cultures, languages, and traditions that enrich our society. Our diversity is our strength, and it is essential that we continue to foster an inclusive environment where everyone feels valued, safe, and respected.

This is why I decided to publicly launch the Greater Together project on Canada Day. The Greater Together project brings together community leaders who share the same goals for Greater Sudbury: that we foster inclusion, economic prosperity, and a high quality of life for all our residents, regardless of background or circumstance.

Starting this fall, local institutions will be invited to sign on to a Greater Together Charter, a high-level commitment to working on common priorities, sharing ideas and resources, and publicizing the positive stories of Greater Sudbury’s successes. As our population grows and our economy expands, we have an amazing opportunity to create conditions that set us all up to succeed.

In addition to celebrating our shared values, I am thrilled to highlight a significant milestone in our ongoing efforts to preserve and enhance our natural environment. Last month, the federal government announced funding through the 2 Billion Trees Program to support the planting of 200,000 more trees in Greater Sudbury. This initiative will not only contribute to the beautification of our city but also play a crucial role in combating climate change, improving air quality, and providing habitats for wildlife.

At the same time, our long history of regreening is just one of the many reasons why Greater Sudbury holds a special place in our nation’s history and why we are a symbol of dedication to creating a sustainable future for generations to come. It is a testament to what we can achieve when we work together towards common goals.

Wishing you all a joyous and memorable July!

Protect Your Leaf and Yard Bags

Keep Them Covered Until Collection Day

To prevent messes and keep bags in good condition, remember to keep your leaf and yard paper bags covered and away from the roadside until your collection day, which happens every other week.

Leaf and yard bags, bundles and containers should only be put at the roadside between 8 p.m. the evening before and 7 a.m. the morning of your leaf and yard collection day.

Try waiting for dry conditions close to your collection day to clean up your yard. Remember unlimited amounts of approved leaf and yard trimmings will be collected!

Eat Local, Reduce Your Carbon Footprint

Climate Feature

A great way to reduce your carbon footprint is to buy food locally. This reduces the amount of energy and resources used for the journey from source to plate. The Sudbury Market is a great option to find local and regional food.

Big-Hearted Ben

Animal of the Month

This handsome three-year-old is available for adoption. Ben came to us as a stray from the community, so we have no information on his background or his breed type. He is very sweet and loving. His favourite thing is when you talk to him in a baby voice.

We are booking meet and greets with families who have other dogs to see if it's a good fit.

If you'd like to meet with Ben, please call the shelter at 705-694-7387 or apply online!

New Gate Fee at All Greater Sudbury Landfills

Make the most of reducing, reusing and recycling

A $5 gate fee will be applied to every vehicle load entering Greater Sudbury landfills and the Walden Small Vehicle Transfer Station, in addition to regular tipping fees. The gate fee was approved as part of the City’s 2024/25 budget.

This initiative aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and landfill wait times by discouraging unnecessary visits to the landfill sites. It also aims to promote responsible waste management practices by encouraging waste reduction, reuse, recycling and composting efforts within our community.
