July is a very special month for all Centers for Independent Living, including the disAbility Resource Center. We celebrate the signing of the Americans with Disabilities Act into law and 2021 marks the 31st Anniversary! There is a lot to CELEBRATE! People, organizations and businesses have had so much to LEARN about accessibility, addressing the basic needs of the public and their consumers. As a community we SHARE in all of the lessons, the triumphs, and the challenges yet to be faced! We will be sharing our own personal testimonies throughout the month and we invite you to join us as we CELEBRATE, LEARN and SHARE!

This year marks the 31st anniversary of President George H.W. Bush signing the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) into law. Throughout this 31st anniversary year, the Civil Rights Division is recognizing the many ways in which the ADA has transformed American society and enabled a generation of Americans with disabilities to thrive. At the same time, we recognize that many barriers to equal opportunity still remain. We recommit to our work of making the promise of the ADA a reality, enabling all Americans with disabilities to achieve their dreams and reach their full potential.

dRC was thrilled to learn that NC DHHS has selected the Community Care of the Lower Cape Fear Region as one of three regions to participate in a groundbreaking program to create a systematic approach to integrating and financing non-medical services that address housing stability, transportation access, food security and interpersonal safety into the delivery of healthcare.
The program known as Healthy Opportunities takes into consideration the important factors besides medical care that drive up health costs. This includes important factors like housing stability, transportation, food access and interpersonal safety. dRC looks forward to being one of the Human Service Organizations (HSO) to deliver pilot services. For someone to be eligible for and receive pilot services, a NC Medicaid Managed Care members must live in one of the counties within our region and have at least one qualifying physical or behavioral health condition, and have one qualifying social risk factor.
A big shout out to Community Care of the Lower Cape Fear for all their hard work to make this happen.
Please stay tuned for further information.

We will also be able to enjoy the music of the very talented Michael Macias. A pianist, composer, and music student at Methodist University, Michael has been playing the piano since he was two years old! He began composing before he was a teenager. Brian (from the dRC) produced Michael's first professional CD of his own original compositions, called "What Michael Sees"and he has composed many more songs since then. Although he has been blind since being 6 months of age, he has been able to show such beauty through his gift. You will really enjoy this chance to meet Michael and hear his incredible playing.

Wednesday, July 28, 2021.
This remarkable book tells the true story of Junius Wilson, a deaf man, who grew up in Castle Hayne, and was wrongfully imprisoned for most of his life. It’s a story about ableism and racism that occurred before the ADA was signed into law. Dr. Burch will guide us through a powerful and thought provoking discussion about his life and his UNSPEAKABLE story. What can we celebrate, learn and share in the spirit of the ADA and the activist work of our disability rights ancestors.
Dr. Susan Burch is a disabled scholar-activist currently living in Vermont. She is professor and director of American Studies at Middlebury College, and the former director of Middlebury’s Center for the Comparative Study of Race and Ethnicity. She previously taught at Gallaudet University, King’s College (University of Aberdeen, Scotland), and the Ohio State University. Professor Burch also has worked as a research associate at the Smithsonian National Museum of American History. Her research and teaching interests focus on histories of deaf, disability, Mad, race, ethnicity, Indigeneity, and gender and sexuality.
You will NOT want to miss this event! ASL and CART will be provided.
This event is free to the public. Donations are greatly appreciated and will support dRC and HEARD (a disability justice organization that especially advocates on behalf of incarcerated deaf and disabled people)
Pre-registration will be required.
