In July's sun-drenched days and starry nights, we're connecting with nature and embracing our mission of creating a sustainable, healthy environment. Summer has us restoring streamside riparian buffers with volunteers and educating the next generation of environmental stewards at summer camp. This month's long days offer countless sights of the season -- yellow and red finches and orioles, as well as colorful wildflowers. So, get out here and enjoy summer!

Stream restoration of the Bushkill Creek continues after dam removal, reintroduction of native species

The Bushkill Creek, as it flows through Easton, is already seeing the benefits of our stream restoration efforts that involved three dam removals in the past year -- including improved habitat for fish and one very important shelled creature.

Native freshwater mussels are nature's filtration system. They improve water quality by cleaning runoff and sediment out of our local waterways, a small but mighty force for the greater ecosystem (mussels are muscle for clean water)!

Kristie Fach, Wildlands’ director of ecological restoration, has been working with the PA Fish and Boat Commission to help reintroduce these vital mollusks.

With the Bushkill Creek being opened and flowing naturally again, mussels can hitch rides on fish that have the freedom to make passage. This supports the mussels’ lifecycle, and supports clean, healthy water in return.

Lehigh Carbon Community College students steward American chestnuts, growing careers in conservation

Did you know? Wildlands helps steward an 1,000-tree American chestnut orchard at Trexler Nature Preserve? It doubles as an outdoor classroom and learning laboratory for LCCC students!

Students partner with us to monitor the orchard, and their experiences prepare them for careers in conservation.

They recently interview our Kate Ebel, Wildlands’ senior restoration ecologist, for a feature in their online magazine, Aspire.
