Sheree Wilson's 35 Years of Service

A mainstay of University Outreach, Sheree Wilson has made a lasting contribution to the administration of community outreach at Auburn, serving more than 35 eventful years. From her start in the College of Education’s Curriculum and Teaching department as an assistant in the In-Service Center, to her current role in the Government and Economic Development Institute (GEDI), Wilson has served Auburn University since 1989.  In her current position as GEDI office manager, Wilson assists the to the GEDI leadership team and oversees the daily office operations of the institute including payroll, timekeeping, human resources, purchasing and more.

“We celebrate Sheree and her commitment to GEDI and Auburn University.  Her years of service highlight her dedication to her job and all it entails.  She is a vital member of our team at GEDI, and we thank her for continued contributions to our office,” said GEDI Director, Jeremy Arthur.

However, Wilson’s service to the university goes well beyond her job. Wilson has represented her fellow Auburn employees on multiple staff committees, including the AU Concessions Board and the Staff Council and Parking Appeals Board. UWA Partners with Auburn University to Bridge Healthcare Gap in Rural Alabama

The University of West Alabama has formed a dynamic partnership with Auburn University’s Rural Health Initiative, aimed at fostering a healthier Alabama. This collaboration is pivotal in addressing the healthcare challenges prevalent in Alabama's Black Belt region. UWA’s innovative approach involves providing the equipment to tackle the technology gaps in rural areas, with a focus on establishing robust internet connectivity in Alabama’s most remote communities to accommodate the cutting-edge OnMed® station.

The University of West Alabama secured a substantial $1,649,440 grant from the US Department of Commerce’s National Telecommunications and Information Administration. This funding will support the Connecting Minority Communities Grant Pilot Program, further empowering UWA’s efforts in bridging the internet divide. Additionally, through a strategic planning grant from a prominent Alabama foundation, UWA is embarking on a comprehensive two-year outreach campaign. This initiative aims to identify and address the pressing public health concerns affecting the Black Belt Region.

In a recent development, representatives from UWA and OnMed® Technology converged in Chambers County to tackle an emerging internet challenge hindering communities committed to hosting an OnMed® station. Through collaborative problem-solving and leveraging innovative solutions like the Starlink internet service, significant strides were made toward overcoming this obstacle. With this collaboration, the Rural Health Initiative is one step closer to ensuring a seamless implementation of vital healthcare infrastructure in rural Alabama.

"We are incredibly grateful to our new friends at UWA for assisting us in navigating the complexities of the internet access landscape across Rural Alabama," said Hollie C. Cost, assistant vice president for university outreach and public service at Auburn University. "Thanks to their efforts, it is likely we will be able to support and install telehealth units to previously unreachable locations around the state."
