Life at Musical Theater Summer Camp

Musical Theater Summer Camp is in its fourth week, with just one week to go! Fifty campers are diving headfirst into an intensive schedule of academics and rehearsals for The Addams Family.

Every day at camp begins with a light breakfast, followed by academic classes. High school students focus on SAT preparation and the college admissions process. Younger campers have a rotating schedule of English, math, science, and art. After a lunch provided by the City of Wilmington, it's time to rehearse for the musical! The afternoon combines chorus rehearsals, choreography, scene blocking, running lines, and more.

At the end of the day, the Young Artist Program (YAP) convenes. The YAP prepares students of working age for careers in the performing arts. Unlike traditional YAPs, which cost hundreds or thousands of dollars, Choir School YAP participants earn a wage for their participation. Thank you to the City of Wilmington and New Castle County for making this transformative program possible!

"It’s been great having the Young Artists Program as a job. Getting to perform and do what I love, and getting paid for it at the same time, is really cool. I will definitely apply this to my future career."

Mia, YAP Marketing Apprentice and rising high school senior

Friday afternoons at camp are reserved for field trips. So far, we've visited the National Air and Space Museum, the Philadelphia Zoo, and a local roller rink! These field trips offer multidisciplinary learning and enrichment opportunities. Plus, they're a chance for campers to build community and blow off some steam!

Summer Learning Academy at Harlan Elementary

For the first time, the Choir School is operating two summer camps this year!

In addition to our Musical Theater Summer Camp, now in its third year, we are operating a brand-new camp for students at Harlan Elementary School! This camp is the latest exciting program to grow from our partnership with the Brandywine School District.

The Summer Learning Academy at Harlan Elementary serves 75 children entering grades K-5. It runs Monday-Friday for five weeks and it is open only to Harlan Elementary students. Camp combines academics, the arts, and lots of local field trips. It will culminate in a talent show finale for friends and family.

Just like our Musical Theater Summer Camp, the Harlan camp is tuition-free, which ensures we can reach ALL kids and families.

Thank you to our friends and partners at Harlan Elementary and the Brandywine School District for making this camp possible!

Heckler and Frabizzio Visit

We are grateful to our friends at Heckler & Frabizzio, a local law firm dedicated to litigation defense, for visiting Musical Theater Summer Camp on July 18th! Attorneys led an interest session for campers that explored careers in law. Afterwards, the firm hosted an ice cream truck for everyone! Thank you for this sweet treat and for sharing your time and talent with us!

Choir School Alumnus in The Lion King

Join us in congratulating Jackson, an alumnus of our Musical Theater Summer Camp, on his Broadway National Tour Debut! Jackson is performing on stages across the country as Young Simba in Disney's The Lion King.

Jackson became interested in musical theater when he attended our Musical Theater Summer Camp in 2022. When we spoke with him in July 2022, he was excited about where theater might take him:

"I started doing camp because my mom was like “okay, these kids have got to get out of the house!” Once I got into it and into it and into it, I just got really excited and it got me thinking 'hey, I could actually do this for a living!' Now I’m inside of a casting call agency.”

We're so proud of Jackson! You can catch him onstage when The Lion King comes to Philadelphia in August and September. (Note: Jackson alternates with another actor as Young Simba, so he will not be onstage at all shows.) But first, join us for The Addams Family to see more rising stars in action!
