The IMPACT Award, established in January 2022, is given to an athlete and a volunteer who has contributed to our organization in a way that exemplifies our commitment to respect, teamwork, and unity. Their behaviors and attitudes show a dedication to making themselves, their teammates, and/or their communities a place where people are valued and encouraged. These individuals promote behaviors and practices that lead to a healthier lifestyle, including sports, friendship, and acceptance.

The June Athlete Award goes to Akhilesh Savand.

Akhilesh is a great swimmer, and his hard work has made him one of the top swimmers in the state of Virginia! He comes ready to achieve and follow plans to decrease his time further. He has mastered all swim strokes and excels in all of them. He is also a leader in his lanes, motivating other swimmers to keep up with him. He is driven, loyal, and enthusiastic at practices and is a pleasure to coach.

The June Volunteer Award goes to Tom Knight.

Tom has served our organization in many ways…as a supportive parent, board member, and coach. He has been instrumental in the success of the Rangers and Cardinals softball teams and helped Top Golf athletes. He has led initiatives to increase diversity in Area 14 and has continued to make meaningful community connections to help us improve.

If you want to nominate someone for an IMPACT award, please email Cynthia Clark. New winners are chosen on the 25th of every month, so nominate a deserving volunteer or athlete!!

Global Messengers become community leaders who communicate stories of hope, acceptance, dignity, and courage worldwide. They help spread our mission and vision and encourage the community to participate in the Special Olympics as an athlete, sponsor, or volunteer.

Our very own Jamie Spiering is a Global Messenger, and he would welcome the opportunity to share his story of the importance of inclusion, a core value of Special Olympics Virginia.
