Along about seven miles of Route 7, we're adding a third lane and shared-use paths in each direction, building a pedestrian underpass to access Colvin Run Mill Park, replacing and raising the bridge over Difficult Run, and making many intersection, bicycle and pedestrian improvements. Learn more.

Construction Updates


In June, crews continued construction activities along the corridor:

Area 1: Reston Avenue to Colvin Forest Drive (Except Baron Cameron Avenue Intersection)


  • Continued drilling noise barrier foundations along eastbound Route 7 between Bishopsgate Way and Markell Court.
  • Started final surface paving and pavement markings on westbound Route 7 between Colvin Forest Drive and Amanda Drive.


Area 2: Baron Cameron Avenue Intersection


  • Completed milling and temporary asphalt removal for Stage 3B.
  • Shifted traffic on westbound Route 7 at the Baron Cameron Avenue intersection to the south.


Area 3: Difficult Run Area (Colvin Forest Drive to Faulkner Drive


  • Completed asphalt milling for Stage 3B and placed curb stone between the pedestrian underpass and Faulkner Drive.
  • Completed construction of the concrete barrier between the eastbound Route 7 travel lanes and the shared use path on the Difficult Run bridge.


Area 4: Faulkner Drive to Jarrett Valley Drive


  • Completed noise barrier panel installation along westbound Route 7 between Towlston Road and 400 feet west of Lyons Street.
  • Placed curb, stone, and base asphalt between Faulkner Drive and Beulah Road.
  • Placed stone, installed drop inlet tops for new stormwater management infrastructure, poured curb, and put down base asphalt for Stage 3B between Beulah Road and Lewinsville Road.  
  • Placed and backfilled curb between Lewinsville Road and Jarrett Valley Drive.


Project-Wide


  • Third-party utility relocation activities are ongoing.
  • Completed installation of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) fiber optic cable for traffic signal communication throughout the project. 
  • Continued grading, placement of stone and paving for the shared-use path.

Work Continues Along Route 7

Construction activities will be ongoing along Route 7 through the spring and summer months. Surface paving will continue, and traffic shifts will occur in the Lewinsville Road area in preparation for the permanent configuration at the Route 7/Lewinsville Road intersection. Please see the project website for information on upcoming lane shifts and other roadway impacts.
