July 2024

SSF Parks & Recreation Department

Happy Parks & Recreation Month!

For nearly 40 years, we have celebrated Park and Recreation Month in July to promote building strong, vibrant and resilient communities through the power of parks and recreation. This month is dedicated to recognizing and celebrating park and recreation professionals, part-time and seasonal workers and volunteers — who maintain and activate our country’s local, state and community parks and recreation facilities.

The services that park and recreation professionals provide are vital to our communities — from protecting open spaces and natural resources to improving wellness and providing activities and resources for all. Park and Recreation Month encourages everyone to reflect on the exponential value park and recreation professionals bring to communities.

This year's theme — “Where You Belong” — celebrates the many ways park and recreation professionals across the country foster a sense of belonging in their community by providing welcoming and inclusive programs, essential services for all ages and abilities, and safe, accessible spaces to build meaningful connections.

This Park and Recreation Month let’s unite and uplift the many reasons why local parks and recreation truly embodies the essence of belonging. Together, we can demonstrate why these spaces are Where You Belong.

NEW SOLO ARTIST EXHIBIT

Explore the poignant artistry of Claudio Talavera-Ballón

Library | Parks and Recreation Center, 901 Civic Campus Way

1st-floor - Corridor and Council Chambers/Theater Atrium

The final of three solo artist exhibitions is by local artist, Claudio Talavera-Ballón. The celebrated collection of oils will be on a 3-month exhibit beginning in June. Titled, "Somos tierra que anda," the work tells the story of the Central American migrants in the recent caravans, who are traveling north in search of a better life. In the artist’s view, the exhibit is an invitation for needed conversations to help us move beyond this highly charged conflict and towards a solution. A fine arts painter, muralist, and speaker Claudio’s work has been reflected throughout the Bay Area for over a decade.

This exhibit was made possible by a generous grant from the San Mateo County Arts Commission and San Mateo County Office of Arts and Culture. To learn more about the artist, visit www.talavera-ballon.com For more information about SSF Cultural Arts Programs, visit www.ssf.net/culturalarts.
