Our Library is an Open Book

At Phillips Free Library though, one thing is constant - we exist to create an equitable world. Our mission is to empower and inspire all people to grow and connect with one another to create a better world for all. Lunchtime Tales

Lunchtime Tales is back for another summer of fun! The day and location has changed for this year. The Homer Recreation Department has moved their crafts to the Homer Community Building (behind the Fire Station and American Legion) and that is where we will meet for the Lunchtime Tales program. Ashley is excited to meet everyone and share stories, songs and more. Bring your own bag lunch and something to sit on. Each child will get a take home craft after the program. No registration necessary. Plenty of great parking! This program will run every Wednesday, rain or shine, from July 10 - August 21 starting at noon.

Stories From the Center of the World: New Middle East Fiction

byJordan Elgrably, Hani Kureishi, et al

place hold HERE

Stories from the Center of the World gathers new writing from the greater Middle East (or SWANA), a vast region that stretches from Southwest Asia, through the Middle East and Turkey, and across Northern Africa. The 25 authors included here come from a wide range of cultures and countries, including Palestine, Syria, Pakistan, Iran, Lebanon, Egypt, and Morocco, to name some.

In “Asha and Haaji,” Hanif Kureishi takes up the cause of outsiders who become uprooted when war or disaster strikes and they flee for safe haven. In Nektaria Anastasiadou’s “The Location of the Soul According to Benyamin Alhadeff,” two students in Istanbul from different classes — and religions that have often been at odds with one another — believe they can overcome all obstacles. MK Harb’s story, “Counter Strike,” is about queer love among Beiruti adolescents; and Salar Abdoh’s “The Long Walk of the Martyrs” invites us into the world of former militants, fighters who fought ISIS or Daesh in Iraq and Syria, who are having a hard time readjusting to civilian life. In “Eleazar,” Karim Kattan tells an unexpected Palestinian story in which the usual antagonists — Israeli occupation forces — are mostly absent, while another malevolent force seems to overtake an unsuspecting family. Omar El Akkad’s “The Icarist” is a coming-of-age story about the underworld in which illegal immigrants are forced to live, and what happens when one dares to break away.

We Shall Be Monsters

by Tara Sim

available after June 25

Kajal knows she is not a good person. If she were, she wouldn’t selfishly be risking her sister’s soul in a dangerous bid to bring her back to life. She would let Lasya rest in peace—but Kajal cannot stand the horror of living without her.

As Kajal prepares for the resurrection, the worst happens: Her sister’s soul warps into a bhuta—a murderous, wraith-like spirit—and Kajal gets sentenced to death for her sister’s rampage. There seems little hope of escape until two strangers offer to free her. The catch: She must resurrect the kingdom’s fallen crown prince to aid a growing rebellion against a tyrannical usurper. Desperate, Kajal rushes to complete her end of the deal . . . only to discover that the boy she’s resurrected, Tav, is not the crown prince.

Now Kajal—prickly, proud, admirer of the scientific method—must team up with Tav—stubborn, reticent, and fonder of swords than of books—to find the real crown prince. With only a scalpel and her undead dog, Kutaa, at her side, Kajal must work fast before her mistake is exposed or Lasya’s bhuta turns its murderous fury on the person truly responsible for her death: Kajal herself.

Summer Reading Celebration

Join us as we celebrate our Summer Reading Program. (please join us even if you didn't participate in the summer reading program). We will have a strolling story time, followed by the obstacle course competition between the library staff, village police and maybe more groups. We will announce the people with the highest number of pages read, and highest number of times reporting. The evening will end with ice cream sundaes. We can't wait to celebrate with you!

Arm Chair Travel

Is traveling on your bucket list? Join us for an evening of Arm Chair Travel. We have 4-6 adults who will talk for no more than 10 minutes about a country they have recently traveled to. Travel vicariously with us to The Netherlands, England, Asia and Portugal. We will also have some refreshements reflecting the areas we visited. Registration preferred: office@phillipsfreelibrary.org

Here Comes the Sun!

Have you ever wanted to take a closer look at the sun? Here is your chance to do it safely! Join us on Monday, August 12th at 10 am as Mike Brady uses his Hydrogen Alpha Telescope to show us how to safely view the sun. We will also hear a story and make a craft. Children (rising 1st grade and older) and teens are welcome to join us. This program is endorsed by the Syracuse Astronomical Society. Please register: office@phillipsfreelibrary.org
