Come Celebrate!

An evening of food, live music, and libations.

Just a short walk or train ride from the Hynes Convention Center, the Social Law Library invites the law-library community to a festive evening at the historic John Adams Courthouse, home of the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court and the Social Law Library.

Founded during the formative period of American law, the Library was established to provide the Massachusetts bench and bar with essential research materials to undergird what John Adams referred to in the Massachusetts Constitution as our "government of laws and not of men."

Perhaps that's why the founders commissioned Paul Revere's apprentice to design the Library's 1804 logo, the centerpiece of which is the "Torch of Knowledge" — a classic symbol signifying that the "Social" Law Library serves a "social good."

Now, as then, Social Law is a torch of legal knowledge that brightens the path of the law for the entire Massachusetts legal establishment.

But Social is also the root word of socialize! So thanks to the Library’s Edgar J. Bellefontaine Endowment, let’s toast the role of law librarians and enjoy a collegial evening where we can eat, drink and be merry!

The Library is proud of its past and prepared for the future.

ALLSTAR TRANSITION REMINDER

We’re getting a new platform hosted through Proximo that will be easier to use, have integrated visuals and analysis, amplified reporting capabilities, simple data entry, and much more.

We are also doing a complete overhaul of the questions contained within the data collection and benchmarking platform. Questions will be created by law librarians and staff for law libraries and get to the heart of the issues that impact law library work the most. The number of questions will be streamlined.

ALLStAR will be on a one-year hiatus while the new tool is created, and we’ll relaunch in the summer of 2024. We are offering current subscribers an additional month of access to the current platform, hosted by Counting Opinions. Feel free to use the month of July to pull any reports you need. If you need assistance in running reports, check out the videos and documents online or reach out to allstar@nellco.org for individual assistance. We will also have a structure in place to request data from ALLStAR before the platform sunsets on July 31, 2023. More details will follow.

We are now accepting volunteers to be a part of the transition. We are seeking volunteers from all levels of academic law library staffing. Please volunteer yourself and recommend volunteering to your colleagues.

We want to recruit a large number of volunteers in various geographic locations, length in careers, library demographics, and position types to get the widest possible range of perspectives.

Transition Working Groups

We are seeking 24-48 total volunteers / 3-6 volunteers per Working Group beginning August 2023. The estimated time commitment is 2 hours per month for 4-6 months.

The Working Groups will focus on one area of the survey (i.e., collections, budget, services) and for that area will:

  • Assist with identifying survey topics for the new product

  • Support testing and refining survey questions and instructions

  • Assist with identifying which survey questions will be visualized
