Tackling Invasive Plants

The Charles River Conservancy (CRC) started the summer volunteer season strongly by supporting the Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR)'s Charles River Vegetation Management Plan (CRVMP)! The CRVMP outlines DCR’s maintenance and restoration plans for:

  • Invasive species management
  • Planting initiatives focused on native New England plant species
  • Routine mowing and vegetation management guidelines for special events

This season, volunteers have been assisting with critical invasive plant management in Cambridge, Watertown, and Boston, focusing on plants such as garlic mustard (Alliaria petiolata) and bittersweet (Celastrus orbiculatus). With the help of our volunteers, we are working towards the shared vision of a healthier and more resilient park ecosystem!

Partnerships along the Charles

Sailing + Science with The American City Coalition

The CRC enjoyed being part of Sailing + Science with The American City Coalition (TACC) and Community Boating (CBI). The CRC and TACC had partnered to reach swimmers from Roxbury and Dorchester to be part of the City Splash swim, but when that event was canceled due to the weather, the CRC joined in the CBI Boathouse to support indoor family engagement with TACC. The CRC brought activities for all ages to learn about the Charles River Floating Wetland. Attendees were invited to build their own wetland, experiment with engineering and design, and check the buoyancy of various building materials to ensure their wetlands would support plant life!

Supporter Spotlight

Biodiversity Builders℠

Since 2020, CRC has been working with Biodiversity Builders℠ to engage their young audience in the parks and on the river. Biodiversity Builders℠ is an education program designed to inspire and empower youth to be Earth Stewards and make an ecological impact in their immediate communities. Youth groups have spent time volunteering with the CRC in the parks to manage invasive species. They’ve also spent the day kayaking on the Charles and created observational drawings of our floating wetland. Thank you to Biodiversity Builders℠ for working with the CRC to inspire the next generation of Charles River stewards! We look forward to continuing this partnership!
